A Critic’s Review Of Days of our Lives: Groundwork, Spotlight & Kudos

The author’s opinions on DAYS are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

When it comes to Days of our Lives, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the Days of our Lives week that was.

Days of our Lives: The Critic Changes Course

With Beauregard’s (Peter Reckell) and Fancy Face’s (Kristian Alfonso) return imminent, I planned to devote this section of the column to my rancor regarding the lack of any discernable groundwork being laid…but then I remembered that John (Drake Hogestyn) did indeed mention that he was on a case, a really important case that precluded him for sticking around to watch Brady (Eric Martsolf) fail at parenting, so there’s that.

It wasn’t much of anything, but I guess that it was something, though I would have appreciated at least one episode that checked in on Megan (Miranda Wilson) and her captive femmes.

So, instead of my intended rant, I’ll shine a spotlight on the plot that I enjoyed most this week: EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) and Stefan’s (Brandon Barash) little game of one-upmanship AKA drinks roulette.

I also find scheme team EJ and Nicole (Arianne Zucker) an absolute hoot, and I’m starting to warm back up to Johnny (Carson Boatman) and Wendy (Victoria Grace). Stefan and Gabi (Camila Banus)…not so much.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t out and out praise actors Emily O’Brien [Gwen Rizczech] and Paul Telfer [Xander Cook]. Their characters’ painful parting of ways was pitch-perfect.

Further DAYS Musings

* Best Days of our Lives Dialogue:

Nicole: “It’s a houseplant in the DiMera living room. It’s been doused with poisons and mind-altering drugs since it was a seedling.”

* I don’t know about anybody else, but I could really go for a “bottle” episode featuring only the battling Brady/Black siblings, Eric (Greg Vaughan) and Belle (Martha Madison) especially.

* Kudos, so many kudos to Finley Rose Slater — she’s doing boffo work as tiny tyrant Rachel Black. I can’t recall ever having such disdain for a child on a soap opera before.

* Now I know Big Mama did not raise Paulina (Jackée Harry) to nibble on a cookie and then pop it back in the jar — or the plastic container as the case may be. Manners woman! Manners!
