The battle for Adrienne’s heart is finally won on Days of Our Lives (DOOL). After months of being torn between two men, she chooses Lucas, over ex-husband, Justin.
Surprise, Surprise
“I didn’t see it coming,” admits Bryan Dattilo (Lucas). “I thought [the writers] did a good job of hiding it. It was as much of a surprise to me as it was to everyone else.
“And I’m so used to not getting the girl,” he adds with a laugh, referring to his character’s history on DAYS. “To finally get her…. I don’t know how to act.”
First, The Good News
Before Adrienne (Judi Evans) announces her choice, she gets good post-surgery news. Her cancer hasn’t spread. At that moment, Lucas, Justin (Wally Kurth) and Sonny (Freddie Smith) are all surrounding her bedside.
“What Adrienne’s going through has trumped the rift [between Lucas and Justin],” explains Dattilo. “We’re all on the same page. We’re all getting along and supporting her.”
Lucas is happy to learn that the woman he loves is going to be okay. “He knows how hard it was for Adrienne to go through this,” says Dattilo. “He’s thrilled for her and sees the future kind of open up with this good news.”
Time to Choose
And things only get better for Lucas. Adrienne says she’s ready to tell the two men in her life which one she’s picked to spend the rest of her life with. Before she can, however, Lucas asks to speak to her alone.
“Because Adrienne’s been spending so much time with Justin, Lucas automatically assumes it’s him,” notes Dattilo. “He tries to beat her to the punch and say, ‘Look, it’s okay. I love you anyway. If you want to be with him, I get it. I get the history you have. I get that Justin’s a good guy. I’m okay with it, because I love you.’”
Lucas Gets the Girl
After listening to Lucas go on and on, Adrienne finally stops him in his tracks. “She’s like, ‘Shut up. You’re talking too much. Let me speak,’” recounts Dattilo. “That’s when she tells Lucas that she’s picked him. She recognizes that Lucas loves her no matter what. And everything Lucas has just said kind of solidifies her choice.”

Needless to say, Lucas “is totally shocked,” which he admits to Adrienne. But he quickly accepts the news. “He’s relieved and happy and overwhelmed that they’re going to be together,” says Dattilo. “Then, he has to leave the room and face Justin before he finds out.”
Time for A Truce
Adrienne summons Justin to her room next and delivers the blow that he’s not her choice. After taking it all in, Justin steps out and has a moment alone with Lucas.
“Justin’s a stand-up guy. He has a lot of character,” points out Dattilo. “It’s a situation he can’t change, so he accepts it as it is. He says, ‘Just take care of her. That’s all I ask, because I love her myself.’ Lucas is very sensitive to Justin’s feelings. They end up shaking hands at the end of the scene.”
Wedding Bell Blues
So what’s next for Lucas and Adrienne? Don’t expect wedding bells to ring for the happily reunited couple.
“Adrienne is actually the one to say, ‘Let’s take a break on the wedding plans. Let’s just enjoy being with each other. I want to be with you and only you, but we don’t have to rush things,’” explains Dattilo. “And Lucas is fine with that.”
But, of course, it’s a soap, so viewers know Lucas and Adrienne really can’t live happily ever after for long, right? “They do for a bit,” teases Dattilo. “Then, a couple of things happen that throw a twist on something Adrienne says and her actions. Lucas ends up feeling a little misled and they start the dance again.”
