Soaps are known for revisiting storylines and themes and now, Days of our Lives is set to bring back one of the show’s most controversial and compelling storylines — Marlena’s possession by the devil!
Days of our Lives Brings Back Marlena’s Possession
Along with a very scary teaser, DAYS first announced the show was revisiting arguably its most memorable storyline ever– Marlena’s (Deidre Hall) demonic possession.
“On the heels of the show’s limited series drop on Peacock last week, Days of our Lives announces the show’s return to one of the most memorable moments in television,” reads a show’s press release. “In 1994, DAYS aired one of the most unforgettable and riveting stories in the show’s history. Beloved fan-favorite character Marlena Evans, therapist/mother/upstanding citizen, became possessed by the devil and wreaked havoc on the residents of Salem. And now, almost three decades later, one of the most legendary storylines in TV history returns to NBC’s longest-running drama series.”
Marlena Evans Devil In A Blue Dress
“The original story began in 1994 when the wicked Stefano DiMera (Joe Mascolo) began hypnotizing Marlena his ‘Queen of the Night,'” the release adds. “The hypnosis, which was meant to make her fall in love with him, left her open to demonic possession and ultimately led to Marlena becoming possessed by the devil. Later that year (on Christmas Eve) in one of the most memorable moments in American pop culture history, Marlena levitated. The story continued through 1995 and concluded that summer when John Black (Drake Hogestyn), her now husband who was thought to be a priest at the time, had to perform an emergency exorcism.”
John was aided by Marlena’s former mother-in-law Caroline Brady (Peggy McCay), a deeply religious woman, and Father Francis (Eric Christmas), a more experienced priest, who guided John. DAYS says that fans can look forward to twists and turns they’ll never suspect as familiar faces return to save the day — or not! Will the devil be stopped again? Stay tuned to find out!
Emotional Aftermath
It took a few years though for John and Marlena to reunite on Days of our Lives. Before they were able to do that, Kristen became a villain and worked overtime to keep the duo apart. Eventually, she was exposed as a liar and manipulator. John and Marlena were remarried in the summer of 1999.
