Of all the soap operas in daytime history, none have created and explored “supercouples” better than Days of Our Lives.
While hundreds of couples who have made hearts race and provided thrills and chills for DAYS fans, there are 5 who hold an extra special place in our hearts.
In no particular order, here are 5 of the greatest Days of Our Lives love stories of all time.
Played by Susan Seaforth Hayes and Bill Hayes, the pairing of Julie and Doug Williams is a 40-year soap opera phenomenon. In December 1970, Julie met Doug Williams, a man paid by Susan Martin to have an affair with Julie. The two fell in love, but Julie married Scott, who was later killed in a construction accident.
Julie then met and married Bob Anderson and Doug began a relationship with Julie’s mother, Addie. Addie then learned she was pregnant with Doug’s child and they married. After Addie gave birth to Hope, she became the victim of a hit-and-run. On her death bed, Julie promised to take care of both Doug and their daughter.
Julie later divorced Bob Anderson, reunited with Doug and they became engaged. The couple weathered many storms together, including Julie’s disfigurement after an oven blew up in her face, Doug’s drinking problem, and his subsequent heart attack. Although they broke up several times, their love for one another is too strong and it’s been decades since anyone tore them apart.
Portrayed by Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves, Jack and Jennifer are beloved by Days of Our Lives fans. Rogue Jack was not the type of guy that innocent Jennifer Horton should have been attracted to, but she was, and found herself falling for one of Salem’s most diabolical sons.
Jennifer refused to let Jack make excuses for the terrible things he had done, and also wouldn’t let him use his position at the newspaper to hurt people he didn’t care for. Jack felt he didn’t deserve Jennifer and was terrified he would end up hurting her like he hurt Kayla.
When Jack pushed Jen away, she fell for Emilio Ramirez and almost married him, but then Jack kidnapped her on her wedding day and he confessed his true feelings. The couple would later marry and become parents to Abigail and JJ. Despite forces that continued to pull them apart, they remained very much in love with each other until Jack’s death in an elevator accident.
Expertly played by Deidre Hall and Drake Hogestyn, Marlena and John’s love affair was a romantic roller coaster for DAYS fans. Initially, the character believed he was Roman Brady, Marlena’s presumed-dead husband.
Reportedly, Roman had extensive plastic surgery, which would explain the drastic change in looks between the real Roman Brady and who would later be revealed as John Black.
The two were married until Marlena’s alleged death in a plane crash. Four years later, she returned to Salem and we learned the real Roman was alive and the Faux Roman went back to calling himself John Black.
Despite this, the two united and Marlena would later give birth to their daughter, Belle. The couple faced many obstacles in their married life that included Hope brainwashing and seducing John. They’re still together today and set to re-marry soon.
Kristian Alfonso and Peter Reckell will always be known to Days fans as Hope and Bo. From the moment they met in 1983, the couple has become the face of the series with fans riding the crest and falls of their romantic relationship alongside them.
Bo kidnapped Hope from her wedding to sly politician Larry Welch and together, the couple rode off on Bo’s motorcycle. She was later kidnapped again and forced to marry Welch. Hope met Bo in secret and reaffirmed her love for him.
The two would eventually make love at an old plantation in New Orleans. Bo and Hope’s royal wedding on location in England was one of the most spectacular soap weddings of all time.
Although the couple faced two decades of love and loss during their relationship, they never stopped having deep feelings for each other. When Bo died in Hope’s arms last year, it was the end of a soap era.
Mary Beth Evans and Stephen Nichols have played Kayla and Steve on and off for decades. Steve Johnson (Patch) held a vendetta against his former best friend, Bo Brady (Kayla’s brother) who had gouged out his eye during a fight. That didn’t stop Kayla from having feelings for him, but he pushed her away to marry his dying brother, Jack.
After Jack raped Kayla, she divorced him and Steve and Kayla soon wed. Steve’s supposedly-dead wife, Marina, resurfaced and soon ended up dead Kayla was accused of the murder.
Due to doctored videotape evidence, Kayla was sentenced to 10 years in prison. She gave birth to a daughter, Stephanie, who Steve would raise while Kayla was in prison. However, Kayla was soon set free, but Steve was later presumed dead. Years later, he returned and Kayla gave birth to a son, Joey. Today, they still have that spark, but are not officially together.
