Long-time Salem resident Maggie Horton arrived in Salem as Mickey’s paralyzed wife, a girl he met on a farm when he had amnesia. Maggie had been paralyzed in a car accident years earlier and was later shocked to find her new husband was really married to Dr.
Laura Horton. Eventually, Mickey and Laura divorced so she could be with his brother, Bill. Maggie soon walked again after Bill performed a miraculous surgery.
Mickey and Maggie went on with their marriage, but Maggie longed for children. Mickey was sterile, so they knew they could never have a child of their own, so they tried adoption. They first took in a little girl named Janice, whose real mother, Joanna, eventually got custody of her.
The ordeal with Janice caused Maggie to become an alcoholic, something she has now battled for decades. The couple also took in Melissa Anderson, who would one day become their adopted daughter.

Maggie still wanted to experience pregnancy for herself and agreed to be a surrogate mother. She was impregnated by Evan Wyland’s sperm and had agreed to give the baby up. After Evan died, she became attached to the baby and she and Mickey kept Sarah and raised her as their own.
After Mickey was presumed dead in 1982, Maggie entered into a relationship with his best friend, Don Craig. After Mickey returned to Salem very much alive, that relationship fizzled. Still, Mickey could not get over what he saw between Maggie and Don and he and Maggie divorced. In 1986, they remarried in a double ceremony when daughter Melissa married Pete Jannings. They remained happy for a few years, but then Maggie had an affair with Neil Curtis. Still, she and Mickey patched things up.
The couple was later presumed dead together when much of Salem was kidnapped to Stefano DiMera’s private island. When they retuned to Salem, they stayed happily married until Mickey died of a heart attack in 2010. Maggie was a successful restaurateur by this time and went on with her life without her beloved Mickey, whom she had been with for nearly 40 years. She eventually found romance with Victor Kiriakis and the pair were married in 2011.
Since then, Maggie has remained a confidant for the Salem younger set, often dishing out advice the way she dishes out food at her restaurants.
