Tanner Novlan, who joined The Bold and the Beautiful last year as Dr. John “Finn” Finnegan, came to the CBS show without having worked in the daytime genre before. He says successfully navigating through the fast-paced schedule has been challenging, but well worth it.
Checking In With Tanner Novlan
“We shot 10 episodes last week,” Novlan recently marveled to Soap Hub. “That’s a monstrous amount of work!” Fortunately, his fellow Canadian and leading lady has helped him get acclimated to the genre.
“I use Jacqui [MacInnes Wood, Steffy] as my North Star,” the actor says with a smile. “Thorsten [Kaye, Ridge] is great, too. I really lean on the veterans. It’s a lot of work, but, honestly, you get used to the pace.”
Alas, current safety protocols often prevent characters from showing as much intimacy as they’ve seen in the past among characters. “Jacqui and I have such great chemistry,” the actor humbly offers. “Could you imagine what it would be like if we could hug?”
Fortunately, Novlan says the entire BB company is coming together to make the show look like it always has. “The directors, producers, and editors all make it work,” he says.
And, as followers of the actor’s Instagram account have seen, Novlan’s wife, Kayla Ewell (ex-Caitlin), has popped in here and there to play the back of Steffy’s head for intimate scenes. “If there’s a time that calls for closeness, [Kayla] has been able to come in and help with those shots,” he says. “As good a job as we’ve done with the mannequins, to have someone there [is great]. Luckily, when she’s available, she’ll come into the studio.”
The actor’s wife appeared on BB as Thomas’s (then, Drew Tyler Bell; now, Matthew Atkinson) teen love interest Caitlin Ramirez. He saw proof positive of that when he made a trip up to the show’s production office where group pictures from past eras hang on the wall. “I took a video of it,” Novlan shares about the BB 2004 cast photo in which his wife appears. “Back then, I wasn’t even thinking about being an actor!” The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS.
