Saturday, October 10, 2020, was designated World Mental Health Day and several of your favorite soap stars took to their social media accounts to share their stories and let others know they’re not alone.

Courtney Hope, who will soon be bringing her very popular The Bold and the Beautiful character, Sally Spectra, over to The Young and the Restless, posted to Instagram her words of inspiration. “I have suffered from anxiety, panic attacks, depression, perfectionism and OCD since I was a KID,” she began. “I won’t get into it, but MAN it’s been a rollercoaster at times. It’s molded me into the person I am today… and it took half a lifetime to realize that it wasn’t a bad thing!”

“It’s so important to be kind, sensitive and empathetic as much as possible,” writes Kelly Kruger (ex-Mac, YR; Eva, BB). “No matter how people appear or what their life looks like from the outside. I personally have been dealing with really bad postpartum anxiety because of this pandemic. I haven’t spoken about it because I like to share things with you once I’ve mastered them and can offer advice or tools on how to cope.”

As for Linsey Godfrey (Sarah, Days of our Lives; ex-Caroline, BB), she had a more general thought she had to share that she hopes others will keep in mind. “It’s time we destigmatize mental health issues. 1 in 4 adults suffer from mental disorders. We shouldn’t shame or mock anyone born with or who developed a trauma based mental disorder. You’re not alone. I’m here. I see you. Together we aren’t alone.”

And while Maurice Benard (Sonny, General Hospital) has been one of the most outspoken leaders on mental health and continues to lead the way with his State of Mind talks on Youtube, it’s his GH co-star, Risa Dorken, whose message about recently dealing with her diagnosis that seemed especially poignant today.

“I’m celebrating 9 months since my Bipolar I diagnosis,” began Dorken, who plays nurse Amy on the ABC soap. “Months that I spent re-learning my body, and getting my head right. I had hit rock-bottom, and couldn’t imagine getting better. I am so grateful for the help of professionals, and for medication that makes it all possible. There is no shame in needing help. I am proud of myself.”

All four soap stars had far more to say than is included here. Please see their posts in their entirety below. For more information about mental health, please visit the National Alliance on Mental Illness website.

🦋 Embrace it ✨ Today is #WorldMentalHealth day! I have suffered from anxiety, panic attacks, depression, perfectionism and OCD since I was a KID. I won’t get into it, but MAN it’s been a rollercoaster at times. It’s molded me into the person I am today… and it took half a lifetime to realize that it wasn’t a bad thing! The more I embraced who I was, my sensitivities, my empathy, my tendencies, and was honest about what I was feeling, the more I could truly become all that I was meant to be and finally happy. It’s okay sometimes to not be okay, but no one is too far gone. I’ve been to both ends of the spectrum and always held tight to the notion that NOTHING lasts forever, and it will get better. I’ve had many ups and downs, but always strive for as much self love as I can muster even if it seems so out of reach. I’ve dedicated my life to understanding the human psyche and human stories, not only mine but others, to better embrace and expand this reality and stigma around mental wellness and true happiness. Once I began learning to celebrate challenge and that not everything has to be perfect for me to be happy, the clouds began to part. My biggest saviors have been my faith, my family and friends, my relationships, my art, my honesty and truth, my writing, my fitness and dance/movement. Find YOUR form of self-expression and courage to create, because that’s your gift to not only this world- but yourself. Take care of your heart, your soul, your head and your spirit. It’s all connected, and on your side. When you make the right choices of surrounding yourself as best you can with goodness, happiness, creation, education, positivity, honesty, truth and inspiring things and people, your perspective begins to broaden little by little. Choose patience. Choose trust. Choose joy. Choose self care. Choose exploration. Choose growth. Choose to embrace. Choose love. Choose life. Choose YOU.

Today is #worldmentalhealthday the truth is, you have no idea what people are struggling with daily. It’s so important to be kind, sensitive and empathetic as much as possible. No matter how people appear or what their life looks like from the outside. I personally have been dealing with really bad postpartum anxiety because of this pandemic. I haven’t spoken about it because I like to share things with you once I’ve mastered them and can offer advice or tools on how to cope. So for now, just know, everyone is fighting their own battles. Be kind, reach out and ask people how they’re doing and offer support where u can. It you are suffering in some way, don’t be ashamed or embarrassed to ask for help. The more we talk about this openly, the less stigma there will be around it. 💛 #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealth #postpartumanxiety

Happy World Mental Health Day! I’m celebrating 9 months since my Bipolar I diagnosis. Months that I spent re-learning my body, and getting my head right. I had hit rock-bottom, and couldn’t imagine getting better. I am so grateful for the help of professionals, and for medication that makes it all possible. There is no shame in needing help. I am proud of myself. It took a village to get me back on my feet, but believe me when I tell you, it was all worth it, and I am so happy to be back to feeling like myself. Take care of your friends, neighbors, and family members- We all need each other more than ever. Reach out if you need help, it can and does get better. #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealth #endthestigma
