In 1989, The Bold and the Beautiful underwent a bit of a makeover when Spectra Fashions officially became a presence on the story canvas. There were showdowns galore between that upstart company and Forrester Creations. Over the years, those battles evolved and then, waned a bit.
Do you miss the fashion wars on BB? Soap Hub posed this question to viewers to see if they long for the days of runway shenanigans!
Eye On Fashion
The majority of you, nearly 63%, say that yes, you do miss seeing different fashion houses battling it out. They started when Sally Spectra (the late, great Darlene Conley) started ripping off Forrester originals, not-so-secretly wanting to be just like the respected couture house.
Sally blackmailed Clarke (Dan McVicar) into stealing designs. When Clarke designed for both companies, he inadvertently created similar showdowns, resulting in reports that something big was a miss!
Other battles included Macy (Bobbie Eakes) being accused of stealing the BeLieF formula and Sally hiring Felicia Forrester (due in no small part to her heritage) to design for Spectra.
Other fashion houses and designers came along including Jackie M that stoked story embers. The key was to always make the story not about the fashions, but how the machinations affected the relationships among the characters.
After The Showstoppers
A little over 37% of you are okay with the show’s emphasis not being on fashion wars. For starters, there are no competing fashion houses on the show right now. Forrester is ruling the runway. Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) is the most likely candidate to topple Forrester, but she’s working under its umbrella now.
These days, the Forrester, Spencer, Logan, and Avant families have plenty of other backdrops currently adding to the show’s drama — including baby switches, medical crises, and affairs of the heart.
Will fashion fights play more of a role on the show? Stay tuned to see what’s going to happen next! The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
