It’s 2025, and the excitement over CBS’s brand-new daytime drama Beyond the Gates is picking up heat in these cold winter months. The groundbreaking soap showed up on Variety’s 41 anticipated new and returning TV shows of 2025. And now there’s more information about what to expect from the first new broadcast daytime series in 25 years.

EPs Tease What’s to Come on BTG

This journey to a new broadcast soap has been four years in the making, so Beyond the Gates executive producers Michele Val Jean and Sheila Ducksworth want to make this show special. Val Jean recently told Entertainment Weekly that it would have regular soap staples like “secrets and lies and betrayals and love and friendship.”

But they’re also hoping to spice it up with something more. Ducksworth told EW the show is “a really complex web of people and places and things that all intersect in a way that you would never believe. It’s incredibly unpredictable and really fresh and new.”

The Family Dynamics

At the heart of the Duprees — the Gates‘ primary family — are Tamara Tunie’s Anita and Clifton Davis’s Vernon. The iconic actors play the matriarch and patriarch of the series. While the Duprees will have dysfunctional tendencies, they will also prove a formidable group.

Said Val Jean, “The Duprees, they don’t always agree. But when push comes to shove, that family will stick together, right, wrong or indifferent. That is basically the foundation of the show. There’s dysfunction, but at the end of the day, they love each other.”

“This is a different kind of world,” the head writer continued. “The characters are different from anything that I’ve seen in daytime. That’s what I’m excited about. We’re presenting something that hasn’t been done before.”

BTG is developed and produced by the CBS Studios/NAACP Venture, led by Sheila Ducksworth, in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble. Michele Val Jean is the creator, executive producer, and showrunner alongside executive producers Sheila Ducksworth, Robert Guza Jr., Julie Carruthers, Leon W. Russell, Derrick Johnson, Kimberly Doebereiner, and Anna Saalfeld.

Beyond the Gates premieres on CBS on February 24, 2025, at 2 pm ET / 1 pm CT.
