As Vernon’s beautiful speech ended the Monday, April 7 episode of Beyond the Gates, we couldn’t help but notice an ominous vibe as we saw a montage of characters who had much to fear. We also saw those inflicting fear, whether consciously or subconsciously.

Be Afraid

Laura Peterson

Poor Nicole’s injured assistant, Laura (Destiny Love). Her recovery is going relatively smoothly. She just had a small procedure, and her recovery was in its last legs. She mentioned being a little scared that she had a job to go back to because Eva (Ambyr Michelle) was doing such a good job as her substitute. It was enough to get Nicole thinking that maybe she needed two assistants.

Unfortunately, Laura isn’t going to even know what hit her. A disguised Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant) dressed up as a nurse and did some harm. She injected Laura’s IV with some liquid. The question is whether it’s enough to stop Laura permanently or for the foreseeable future.

Nicole Dupree Richardson

As long as Dr. Ted (Maurice Johnson) is only mildly attempting to stop Leslie, Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) needs to be afraid. Sure, the plastic surgeon paid his ex-fling a cool $50K to exit stage right. For some reason, he doesn’t realize how unhinged Leslie really is, despite her pretending to jump off the hospital roof and showing up at Nicole’s awards ceremony. and then again outside the restaurant. Ted and Nicole’s anniversary party is coming up, so the renowned psychiatrist should be afraid, very afraid.

Tyrell Richardson

Poor Tyrell (Jaden Lucas Miller) is getting cyberbullied. Unfortunately for him, he follows in his dad’s footsteps, who keeps major secrets from his husband. Tyrell won’t talk about what he’s going through to anybody but his sister. There’s no telling where this will lead next.

Bradley “Smitty” Smith

First, Smitty (Mike Manning) is trying to hold the family together, and you can tell that he’s kind of drowning. He has kids who won’t tell him what’s truly going on, and his husband is doing the same. Now, he’s adding a serious investigative story to his plate that could prove dangerous.

Fear and Control

Leslie “Dana” Thomas

Yikes. Leslie is growing more unhinged by the day. She has a vision, and nothing will stop her from achieving it. But we’re about to find out how serious she is. Did she kill Laura, put her in a coma, or simply mess up her recovery? Anything so Eva can hold on to her job. If she just waited a little longer, she would have found out that Eva was probably not going anywhere. Patience isn’t Leslie’s strong suit.

Also, she took Ted’s money, which is icing on the cake. She is mostly here for some old-fashioned payback. Back in the day, Ted made her feel like they were going to be a family. Meanwhile, that was never going to happen. He was never going to leave the family he already had. Now that Leslie knows that, she’s going to blow his world up.

Congressman Martin Richardson

What we need to fear about Martin (Brandon Claybon) is his insatiable need to seek a higher office. He’s not content with his congressional title. He wants to be the leader of the free world, and he won’t let a little thing like his horrifying secret get in the way. He won’t let his grandparents, Anita (Tamara Tunie) and Vernon (Clifton Davis), get in the way either.

That’s why we fear for Martin’s family. He’s controlling, he has what could turn into dangerous nightmares, and he wants his family front and center in the public eye in the biggest possible way. This most certainly would have ramifications that he’s not thinking about. It’s a case of Martin living a big-picture life and not thinking enough about his small corner of the world.
