We are not ashamed to say it: We are loving Beyond The Gates. We love seeing the veteran actors again. We love getting to know the fresh new faces. There are stories we love. And yet, there is one thing that’s mysteriously missing.
The Family Romance
At their core, soaps are about family. That’s why it’s so nice to see stories that are family-based. Everything from Eva’s (Ambyr Michelle) quest to connect with her secret father, Ted (Maurice Johnson), at the prodding of her criminally insane mother, Leslie (Trisha-Mann Grant), to Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) suing her arrogant dad, Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett), to Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) and Kat (Colby Muhammad) taking little cousin Samantha (Najah Jackson) under their high fashion wings.

It Takes Two
Soaps are also about couples. Anita (Tamara Tunie) and Vernon (Clifton Davis) are obviously the OG BTG pairing. Was anything hotter than when they clutched hands and committed, “Agreed?” “Agreed.”
Despite the affair with Leslie and the presumed illegitimate daughter Eva, Ted and Nicole (Daphnee Duplaix) appear to be solid. As do Martin (Brandon Calyborn) and Smitty (Mike Manning) — even if Martin is a control freak and a pretty lousy husband.
Except for her little tantrum when Jacob (Jibre Hordges) rightfully arrested Dani (Karla Mosley), it’s obvious that Naomi loves her husband. Oh, there’s also Ashley (Jen Jacob) and Derek (Ben Gavin). He saved a cat.
Isn’t It Romantic
So, BTG is full of couples. But it’s lacking romance. Every single couple we’ve named above was already together when the show premiered. We didn’t get a chance to watch them meet and fall in love. We didn’t get the chance to root for them.
Currently, there is no one to root for romantically on BTG. The closest thing to a new young couple is Kate and Tomas (Alex Alegria). And they’re…are they really a couple? She told him she was a virgin. He said, “That’s…interesting. But, you know, cool.” Then Eva flirted with him. Kat got huffy. Tomas didn’t really say anything to make us believe he is truly interested in Kat. Or Eva, for that matter.
Soaps are about family and couples, but there are very, very much about romance. And BTG hasn’t given us any yet. We’re anxiously waiting.
