Two mother-daughter conversations took place in the Wednesday, April 23 episode of Beyond the Gates. Both involved conflict, but the tones were different for very good reasons. In other news, we saw Vanessa and Doug reconnect.

Conflicting Conversations

Dani and Chelsea

It seemed like Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) couldn’t believe her mother turned her down after offering to work with her again. It took her a lot to accept what Kat (Colby Muhammad) pitched, and so she clearly assumed her mother would jump at the chance to work for her company and help lift her new venture to stratospheric heights.

But Dani (Karla Mosley) woke up to what she needed to do. She needed to get her fire back, and the way to do that wasn’t to take several steps backward and work for her daughter. She needed to do something for herself. And this modeling agency with Pamela (Cady McClain) was the way to do it. She was excited, and she was able to convey to her daughter why things needed to be this way.

Chelsea understood. She may have been a little wary, but at the end of the day, she understood what her mother was trying to say. It was a wonderful, uplifting, and painful chat to witness, but in the end, the two understood each other more. And if they ever needed help, they would both be there for each other.

Leslie and Eva

Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant) and Eva (Ambyr Michelle) weren’t on the same page during their conversation, and their tones alternated from sarcasm and bitterness to anger. Eva spotted her mom at the Fairmont Crest Country Club talking to Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) as her alter ego, Sherry Carter. “Sherry” told Nicole she was leaving town because now she had her purpose. And psychiatrist Nicole lapped up every word of it.

The second Leslie got home, she condescendingly reenacted the conversation, which painted Nicole in a pathetic light. When Eva arrived home, Leslie didn’t stop the sarcasm. In fact, she layered it with bitterness and desperation. She took much pleasure in potentially blowing up Nicole’s world. It’s like she has it more out for Nicole than she does or the man who really did do her wrong back in the day.

And she couldn’t recognize when a person was genuinely nice and genuinely helpful. Meanwhile, Eva sees it on a daily basis. She sees how Nicole and Ted (Maurice Johnson) have included her in their world. She sees the sun and then goes home, where it’s all shadow and darkness. Eva finally had it. She was sick of her mom’s lies. “You are such a liar! A diabolical, pathological LIAR,” she screamed at Leslie. It was harsh, but every word was true, not that Leslie acknowledged any of that, despite Eva telling her she saw “Sherry” at the club talking to Nicole.

That fight spiraled quickly, and it should add to the suspense of what will go down at the anniversary party. Will Leslie be able to blow up everyone’s lives with her truth?

ExtraMarital Issues

Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli) and Doug (Jason Graham) are basically married roommates. They lead largely separate lives with their own extracurricular activities. Vanessa has her own real estate business, her old money, and her own affairs. Doug has his work as a cardiac surgeon at the hospital, and as a gambler, he knows when to hold ’em, but he doesn’t know when to fold ’em. Although he’s trying hard to fight the urge. The two insist that they love each other, but it’s not clear that they’re IN love with each other anymore.

Well, on Wednesday, Doug gave in to that gambling urge when he played a lottery ticket and won. Of course, he blew it the next second (we think, we don’t totally trust Randy [Maurice P. Kerry] to tell the truth). Later, Doug spotted his wife (close) talking business with Joey Armstrong (Jon Lindstrom). The next thing we knew, Vanessa and Doug were in a hotel room, making love.

It helped us see the connection between the two. We get why they got married. They have that friendship spark, but they have that chemistry spark, too. And they want to protect each other. Doug is doing everything he can to prevent Vanessa from having to bail him out. But who knows how much longer he can do that. Meanwhile, Joey definitely intrigues Vanessa. He will be in the picture for the foreseeable future.
