Anita Dupree and Detective Marcel Malone were treated like mentors of sorts in the Monday, March 24 episode of Beyond the Gates. Naomi turned to her grandmother for advice on whether or not she should take on a lawsuit that would pit her against her father. Meanwhile, Jacob’s dad told Marcel to step up with his son and make sure to keep their secrets secret. In a sea of model mentors, be an Anita Dupree. Do not be a Marcell Malone.
Mentor Madness
Anita Dupree
Who better to give sage advice than Mrs. Anita Dupree (Tamara Tunie)? She listened to Naomi (Arielle Prepetit), who had all sorts of reasons why she shouldn’t take the sexual harassment lawsuit against her father’s firm. At the core, the attorney was insecure about whether she could defeat her larger-than-life dad, who had years more experience than her, not to mention the bad and overwhelming press that could result from this father/daughter showdown.
Anita told her granddaughter to use her strength. It was a strength that all Dupree women possessed. She had no doubts that Naomi could rise to the challenge.

In turn, Naomi listened to her grandmother talk about the good old days, what she had to deal with back then, and why she gave it all up. They even had enough time for Anita to school Naomi musically and lyrically while Naomi schooled Anita on some of today’s cooler, more acceptable lingo. It was a fun, impromptu mentor/mentee session, and we hope the show will continue to showcase it.
Detective Marcel Malone
While Jacob (Jibre Hordges) and Detective Malone (Darryl W. Handy) didn’t meet face-to-face in Monday’s episode, Jacob had his sudden mentor on his mind. He felt Marcel wasn’t acting like the role model he had hoped to have. The guy wasn’t buy-the-book, and he would rather haze Jacob and treat him like a grunt than a rookie with potential.

By the end of the hour, it was clear that Jacob better not let his guard down. He will need to stay wary of Marcel from here on out. His dad, Chief Elon Hawthorne (Malachi Malik), didn’t give his son the real skinny on Marcel. His dad knows exactly what kind of cop Malone is, which is why he warned the veteran detective to be nice to his son.

And it also looked like Marcel was in Joey Armstrong’s (Jon Lindstrom) pocket. He called up the casino boss and told him about Jacob witnessing Joey doing his own dirty work. Armstrong forcefully told Malone to handle it. He did not look happy. Will Marcel’s influence get Jacob in trouble? Whatever their dynamic ends up being, this won’t be a healthy mentor-mentee situation.
