A lot of messiness occurred in the Tuesday, September 30, episode of Beyond the Gates. Ted witnessed yet another date between Carlton and Nicole. Joey tried to convince Vanessa to give up her crusade to find out more about Doug’s death. Meanwhile, Martin set boundaries with Smitty while Kat dealt with the fallout from catching Eva and Tomas post-sex. It wasn’t pretty. Let’s concentrate on BTG’s Martin and Smitty, along with the toxic trio of Eva, Thomas, and Kat.

Martin and Smitty

These scenes left us unexpectedly emotional. Things were going well. Martin (Brandon Claybon) and Smitty (Mike Manning) had dinner, and it was as if the two were working their way back to each other. They were in sync. Then Martin leaned in to kiss his husband.

But Martin didn’t let the kiss happen. Instead, he had a reaction that probably looked stupid, but was, in reality, smart and healthy. He didn’t kiss Smitty because he didn’t want a part-time or halfway relationship. He didn’t want to share intimacy with his husband and then go back to sleeping on the couch as if he had one foot out the door.

Martin wanted his marriage back—all of it. He knows he and Smitty will never be the way they once were. But there’s an opportunity for their relationship to evolve, or how did Kat (Colby Muhammad) put it in this episode? Elevate. Martin was completely justified in wanting more for them, and so he decided to leave until the day Smitty could completely forgive him for his transgressions. And for the day that the two can, once again, live as husband and husband 100 percent.

“I can’t occupy only a tiny corner of your world,” Martin said. “If I’m yours, I’m everywhere.”

Martin has been doing the work, and he knows his flaws; he owns them, and he acknowledges how he was responsible for their relationship going off the rails. It’s time for Smitty to do some work.

Eva, Tomas, and Kat

As heartfelt and emotional as Martin and Smitty were, that’s how messy and toxic Eva (Ambyr Michelle), Tomas (Alex Alegria), and Kat were. Their individual thought processes were illogical.

At the end of the day, Eva has real feelings for Tomas, yet she got with him knowing full well he was still with her hated half-sister. It doesn’t matter that Kat had been ghosting him. They never officially broke up. And by the end of the episode, Eva realized she was in the same position as her mother — she put all her eggs in the basket of a man who wasn’t available.

Meanwhile, it seems that Kat’s ego has been hurt, and she doesn’t have deep feelings for Tomas, although there are some feelings present. However, for her, this was about not letting Eva get her man. And as a result, she wasn’t willing to ditch the guy who would treat her so horribly. If she could only listen to the words Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) was throwing at her. They should have done the job, but for now, Kat’s not willing to give up Tomas, even though she should be running from the man. Why won’t she do that?

Finally, Tomas doesn’t know what he wants. Actually, scratch that. He wants his cake and to get to eat it, too. He wants the girl who gives him the feels and takes care of him on an emotional level (Eva), and then with Kat, he wants something different. Eva put it so well when she had an epiphany.

“You want someone you can mold. But also who can take you places.” Tomas wants it all. He wants to keep the fulfilling friendship and also the status of being with a Dupree. It’s what he thinks he deserves.

Kat and Eva should both steer clear of this guy. But for some reason, Kat’s not there yet.
