At the end of last week, Ashley asked Derek to marry him. On the Monday, September 15 episode of Beyond the Gates, Derek gave Ashley his answer. After a little finagling and assuring Derek that her desire to marry him was real, despite his condition, he said yes. But Ashley doesn’t know that Derek is hiding the fact that he’s already starting to get feelings back in his legs. This fact isn’t very heroic of him.
So, when Ashley finds out about her fiancé’s secret, will she have buyer’s remorse? Is this proposal of hers so genuine that she won’t change her mind should she find out the truth?
He Said Yes
Derek (Ben Gavin) had concerns about what Ashley (Jen Jacob) asked him since, as far as she knew, he was paralyzed. Underneath it all, however, he was thinking about his secret.
He had to want to know if she would ask him if he was simply injured and not paralyzed. But, for now, he has to take it on her word that she wants to be there for him through sickness and health—emphasis on sickness. She wants to take care of him as he works hard to regain the ability to walk.
It feels like a challenge for her or a way to give him inspiration to fight and persevere. But was Ashley’s proposal genuine? Shanice had her doubts.
Derek Lied to Shanice
Shanice is beyond smart, whether she’s in nurse or physical therapist mode. She is hip to the fact that Derek’s legs are starting to wake up, that he has feeling in them again. But she wants confirmation, and Derek doesn’t give it to her.
Shanice warns him that if he is feeling something again, he owes it to Ashley to tell her. She was all liberated and free, and now she’s tying herself down again. Shanice insisted that this warning had nothing to do with Derek and Shanice’s dates and everything to do with Derek being cruel if Ashley didn’t know the whole truth.
Derek had an out, and he didn’t take it.
So is Ashley’s love genuine? She probably does love Derek. At the very least, she cares about him immensely. But it’s more of the safe kind of love and caring. And if this assessment is wrong, then she’s going to have to do a better job of convincing us. Because it feels like Ashley keeps trying to talk herself into thinking that Derek’s the love of her life.
