In an episode where Diego planted a kiss on Pamela, and Leslie would have liked to have made Jacob disappear with his line of questioning about Laura’s hit-and-run, there was surprisingly a lot of relationship talk. In the Monday, May 19 episode of Beyond the Gates, we received a status update on several of the show’s couples.
Relationship Status Updates
Ashley and Derek Status: Single and Living With Each Other
Ever since Ashley (Jen Jacob) and Derek (Ben Gavin) moved in together, they have been out of sync. Derek can’t do anything right, and he doesn’t understand that nobody wants a moosehead hanging on their wall. He also makes assumptions that nobody else in this world would make. Why would he throw away her food that has nothing to do with him?
Meanwhile, Ashley has a super low tolerance for other people’s mannerisms. She has cringed at everything this guy has done since they cohabited. And that’s no way to live. He’s on edge 24/7, and that’s the worst kind of situation. They didn’t officially break up, but they’re pretty much teetering, and he’s already packing up his tiny suitcase.

Dani and Andre Status: Casual/Friends with Benefits (emphasis on the benefits)
Honestly, we feel that Dani (Karla Mosley) feels as much for Andre (Sean Freeman) as he does for her. However, she’s not in a place or mindset to admit it. Instead, she’s all about the benefits that they do so well. They are friends, too, and they will stick up for each other and champion each other, but Dani also needs to keep this relationship on the down low. She doesn’t want to do the work and find out who she is in this current timeline.
It looks like Andre would love nothing more than to make their relationship public. If he can’t have that with her, would he go elsewhere to get it? He ran into Ashley at Uptown, who was distraught over went down with her firefighter boyfriend.
Vanessa and Doug Status: Married Roommates/Co-Parents
Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli) and Doug (Jason Graham) lead pretty separate lives, despite also being somewhat codependent. The realtor insisted she would never leave Doug, but she also finally admitted that she turns to other men. That admission was cathartic for her. Doug, on the other hand, told his wife he wasn’t cheating on her. But she knows something is up with him, and while he confirmed that there was, he didn’t confess to his gambling addiction.
These two have an interesting marriage. What’s holding them together? Why do they go home to each other at the end of the day, or whenever they aren’t having an affair or head to the poker tables? And we can’t forget that Vanessa really liked the fact that Doug was jealous of Joey (Jon Lindstrom). It was like a confirmation that her husband not only loved her, but he was still in love with her. And she gets jealous of him despite her string of affairs. These two are in trouble because of Joey, and they don’t realize it yet.

Kat and Tomas: Single and Getting to Know Each Other
Kat (Colby Muhammad) and Tomas (Alex Alegria) are super new and super shaky. She has made it her mission to bring down Eva (Ambyr Michelle) and Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant), and Tomas has a soft spot for Eva. Also, these two are ambitious, and their work could take priority. They aren’t in lockstep, and, honestly, we’re not sure they are as compatible as they should be. But for now, they are trying.
They communicate their feelings, which is good, but are they destined for the long run? We’re not sure.
