The Regret-Worthy Move Martin Almost Made on the July 15 Beyond the Gates

And the one reason why he didn’t make it.

In the Tuesday, July 15 episode of Beyond the Gates, Martin was this close to making a move he would probably end up regretting. Besides, there was something we wished he had done first, before calling the press conference.

The Press Conference

Martin (Brandon Claybon) seemed determined to confess the truth behind what happened two years ago. Although part of us wondered that when he started his press conference that what he really was going to do was resign from his political gig. He would make that sacrifice for his family and to keep that secret hidden. A secret that might involve a hate crime of sorts, and him defending himself and Vernon (Clifton Davis) from the hate crime? To which he wouldn’t be the bad guy, would he, Kenneth?

We still don’t know the exact details, of course. But Joey’s (Jon Lindstrom) people came through. And by people, we mean shady Detective Marcel Malone (Darryl W. Handy) and his people. Malone is probably expecting another big-ticket payout to solidify his impending retirement.

Thankfully, Martin didn’t tell his story at Orphey Gene’s in front of Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett), Vernon, Joey, Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli), and the press gathered.

What Martin Should Have Done First

The whole time Martin was at the press conference, ready to tell his story, we couldn’t help but think of his family. At home, Smitty (Mike Manning) had to attempt to explain to Samantha (Najah Jackson) and Tyrell (Jaden Lucas Miller) why he was basically throwing Martin out of the house. The teens didn’t understand. They wanted Smitty to let Martin explain his side of things first. However, like Smitty said, he has given Martin multiple chances to explain.

If Martin had confessed to whatever went down two years ago at the press conference, it would have been frustrating because then his family would have found out about this horrific happening, along with the rest of the world. Martin needed to sit Smitty, Tyrell, and Samantha down first. He should have given them a heads-up as to what was about to happen. And he should have included them in this decision.

They have a right to know before the world does. At the very least, Smitty deserved to know first before anyone else. He’s Martin’s husband, after all. Smitty was understandably upset, and this could very well be a dealbreaker.

Gone Busboy, Gone

Marcel offered proof that Kenneth (Jason Vendryes) the bigoted busboy was suitably and decisively taken care of. What were those emotions all over Martin’s face? Were they feelings of guilt over this whole Kenneth situation being resolved with violence? Or relief that he would no longer have to look over his shoulder?

With Kenneth gone, will they all be able to put this horrific business in their rearview? There’s always a chance that after Martin talks to Smitty, they decide that Martin should come clean with the police. But something tells us Smitty might make the decision to also keep it secret.
