In the Wednesday, October 8 episode of Beyond the Gates, Smitty expectedly shot down Martin’s bad idea about turning himself in. And, for once, he didn’t just stay mad at Martin, although he was plenty upset. He actually came up with ways they could work together on forgiveness. Will doing the work actually lead to the husbands reuniting on all levels?

Key Takeaways:

  • Smitty initially misreads Martin’s intentions, accusing him of manipulation before realizing the truth.
  • The couple agrees to couples counseling to work through past hurts and strengthen their bond.
  • Reinstating date nights could help Martin and Smitty reconnect and rediscover what brought them together.

Smitty’s Mistake

Sometimes Smitty (Mike Manning) can’t help himself. It’s like sometimes he acts, Martin (Brandon Claybon) kept the big secret for 25 years, like Ted (Keith D. Robinson) kept his affair from Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix). It was more like two years, and while it’s understandable for Smitty to be upset with his husband, there’s a reason why he can’t find it within himself to forgive him.

That led him to make a big mistake or overreaction on Wednesday. He accused Martin of threatening to turn himself in to the police as a strategy to get Smitty back on his side. For a moment, Smitty felt that Martin’s grand gesture wasn’t genuine. Instead, it was designed to manipulate Smitty’s emotions.

But Martin had the receipts. He had texted Jacob (Jibre Hordges) to tell him that he needed to talk to him. And Smitty had to apologize. However, he clearly needs to get to the bottom of why he thinks his husband could resort to such manipulation.

And now, thanks to Smitty’s suggestions, they just might be able to do that. Thankfully, the two are not willing to give up on their marriage.

Doing the Work

Smitty’s plan is two-fold. Finally, they are going to do couples counseling. And they better get references from Nicole because she needs to stay out of this. Both Martin and Smitty (who recently connected with Ted) will benefit from counseling, not only about their relationship. Hopefully, the therapist can help them identify what in their own lives or their respective pasts influenced their behavior today.

The second thing is also much needed. They’re going to reinstate date nights, which apparently, they had earlier in their relationship. When BTG began, Martin and Smitty were well within their marriage, and they had become a couple focused on their work and kids, or in Smitty’s case, getting back to work.

We hardly ever saw them have fun, and now there’s a very real chance that we’ll get to see what makes them click. And get to see them rebuild and repair their bond. So it’s an exciting development, provided that the writers actually show us this side of them. Ultimately, we might finally get to see why these two fell in love in the first place.

What did you think about Martin and Smitty? Also, Dani’s (Karla Mosley) and Nicole’s conversation was quite good. What did you think of Nicole thinking she’ll never love again? Let us know in the comments.
