The Monday, October 6, the episode of Beyond the Gates featured a rare sighting: Ted and Smitty sitting in a booth, talking. Later, Martin shared a plan with his husband designed to get him back. Will Smitty go along with Martin’s very risky idea?
Key Takeaways:
- Ted and Smitty have an honest and emotional conversation about faith, trust, and forgiveness.
- Martin confides that shame kept him from telling Smitty the full truth.
- A shocking confession and bold plan could change Martin and Smitty’s future.
Father-in-Law to Son-in-Law
It was really nice to see Ted (Keith D. Robinson) and Smitty (Mike Manning) connect at Orphey Gene’s, considering we hardly ever see the two interact. We don’t even see Ted and Martin (Brandon Claybon) connect that much. The two had a quality conversation about the lies Ted and Martin told their significant others and how Ted is facing a divorce while Martin and Smitty are still separated.
The best part of their chat had to be when Smitty admitted that the Duprees had been harsh with Ted. Ted countered by telling Smitty that he thinks he has been just as hard on Martin. Smitty said he needed proof or a sign that it was okay to trust Martin again and that trust and his faith in Martin would come flooding back.
But Ted basically told him that he couldn’t wait for a sign to restore his faith in his husband, again. “Because, Smitty, that’s what faith is,” Ted stated. “It’s believing in something you can’t see. Maybe you should decide to trust him again.”
It was good to see Ted sharing wise words, and while he may be a little delusional in thinking that he and Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) could eventually reunite, he knows he did her wrong.
Gigantic Gesture
Later, once Ted left to go visit Nicole, Martin caught up with Smitty at Orphey Gene’s. He discussed how his lies extended beyond protecting his husband and their family. Part of the reason why he refrained from telling Smitty about what he did that fateful night was that he didn’t want Smitty to look at him differently. He didn’t want his husband to be ashamed of him.
Martin has been putting in a lot of work and trying to learn from his mistakes. However, he may be going too far. He also told Smitty that one way he feels he can clear things up between them and earn back the respect he lost is to turn himself in to the police.
This conversation could be a turning point for this marriage. Let’s just hope that Martin’s desire to turn himself over to the police is a gesture grand enough to get Smitty to drop his walls with Martin and let him back into his life completely. And then Smitty could tell Martin that the act of wanting to do this was enough of a sign. That he doesn’t need to actually turn himself in.
What did you think of Ted and Smitty’s conversation? Do you think Martin will really turn himself in?
