After tuning in to the Wednesday, October 22, episode of Beyond the Gates, we have three burning questions. Actually, there’s a fourth bonus question, too.

Key Takeaways

  • Naomi and Jacob’s differing views on parenthood could shake their marriage to its core.
  • Vanessa’s determination to share Joey’s dangerous world raises red flags — and suspicions.
  • Anita’s instincts about Nicole’s emotional well-being may prove painfully accurate.

Burning Question #1: Are Naomi and Jacob built to last?

These last couple of weeks of BTG episodes have featured Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) and Jacob (Jibre Hordges) debating the evolution of their marriage. Initially, they agreed to be married without having children.

But the thought of Naomi being pregnant got Jacob thinking a type of way. And Naomi could see it. Now that they have found out she isn’t pregnant, they can’t just put the toothpaste back in the tube. She knows that Jacob wants children. She won’t be able to get the fact that he may start eventually resenting her out of her head.

And while Jacob thinks there’s no way that would ever happen, can he be sure of that? He was all in on being a dad from the moment he thought he was about to become one. Time will tell if Naomi and Jacob’s marriage will hold up after they had to dissect and analyze their varying opinions about potential parenthood. Naomi said it herself. She is relieved she isn’t pregnant. Jacob doesn’t feel the same.

Burning Question #2: Does Vanessa really want Joey’s life?

Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli) is a determined woman. In Wednesday’s episode, she told Joey (Jon Lindstrom) that she wanted to be his equal in their business. And he responded by telling her that she really didn’t. He explained that his world comes with struggles, danger, risks, secrets, and a certain reputation. And he tried to distract her from continuing along this line of thinking.

But Vanessa would not have it. She said she’s ready for everything that comes with what she is asking for. And she, apparently, can’t comprehend that Joey’s world isn’t appropriate for her son, or her daughter, for that matter. However, her son is in the DMV now, and so far, he hasn’t left, despite Vanessa thinking she can get him to return to school.

Joey thinks the risks he faces every day are too great for Vanessa to handle. But she thinks she is up for the challenge. The question here is, why does she want a bigger stake in the action? What from her past explains why she is laser-focused on taking on every aspect of Joey’s organization? And what would she say if Donnell (Alex Cheeks) figured out what was going on with his mom?

Burning Question #3: Is Anita right — is Nicole not okay?

As a psychiatrist, Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) knows all the coping mechanisms to make it seem like she’s okay. But after she achieved closure with Ted (Keith D. Robinson). And after her latest conversation with her parents, Nicole has been doing a good impression of acting like someone who is okay and is moving on with her life.

However, Anita (Tamara Tunie) feels that deep down, Nicole isn’t okay at all. If Nicole isn’t okay, what is that going to look like for her immediate future? Will she be able to forge a relationship with Carlton (Robert Christopher Riley)? Or will she relegate him to the friend zone forever?

Bonus Question: How great was it to see Vernon and Anita use their elevator?

Was this the first time we saw someone use the elevator in Vernon (Clifton Davis) and Anita’s house? Not sure, but it was fun to see the esteemed matriarch and patriarch of the Dupree family incorporate the elevator into their fun. More, please.

In other news, what did you think of Leslie (Tricia Mann-Grant) and Peaches (Arle Michel)? And how about Eva (Ambyr Michelle) and the new-to-the-scene Izaiah (David Lami Friebe)? Did you see sparks? Let us know in the comments.
