A lot of positive energy was present in the Thursday, April 17 episode of Beyond the Gates. Tyrell’s outlook on the cyberbullying he’s experiencing at school took a turn. Naomi gained closure with her dad regarding the lawsuit. And Samantha learned there might be a way she can actually pursue modeling. The only exception to the positive rule was Vanessa and Doug.
The Wins
Win #1
Tyrell (Jaden Lucas Miller) connected at home and with someone from school. Once again, he and Martin (Brandon Claybon) clashed about his dad’s controlling ways. He needed Martin to stay out of his life, but that’s not what parents do. He didn’t appreciate his father going to the school principal. All of a sudden, they scheduled a school assembly that only served to make him more of an outsider.
Or so he thought. At Orphey Gene’s, Tyrell ended up talking to Jessica, the girlfriend of the jock who punched Tyrell after she received the racy photo. It turned out that she broke up with the guy, and she looked like she was interested in Tyrell. If she’s on the up and up, this could be the start of a beautiful friendship and maybe more. Tyrell needs to offer to teach Jessica chess.
Later, Tyrell told his dads he wouldn’t run away and transfer schools. He would rather stay, be himself, and continue to forge a positive high school experience. Things are looking up for him.
Win #2
Tyrell’s sister, Samantha (Najah Jackson), skipped the assembly in favor of spending time with Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) and Kat (Colby Muhammad). She doubled down on wanting to model, and Kat came up with a potential way for her to slow-burn her modeling career, stay in school, and keep Martin happy. And that’s if she starts modeling for Chelsea’s new line. Right now it’s bags, but the future is limitless.
Both Tyrell and Samantha mentioned their time before Martin and Smitty (Mike Manning) adopted them. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about that soon. The way they’re talking about it, it doesn’t sound pretty.

Win #3
Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) and the women she formerly represented wanted to settle, and they wanted Naomi to take their money home for them. They were happy with the money and getting their old jobs, but they wanted more of a say in the hiring practices.
So Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) dropped by Uptown to see his daughter in person. Naomi ran by the addition to the settlement, and…Bill agreed. He may have been happy because they didn’t ask for more money. Naomi had to play a little hardball, but she got the job done. And, once again, Bill looked proud.

Not So Much a Win
Vanessa (Lauren Buglioli) and Doug (Jason Graham) were more complicated. The cardiologist is currently overworking to compensate for ignoring his inner gambler. He has stacked his day with procedure after procedure, running himself ragged and leaving no time for his wife.
Finally, these two sat down for a chat and acknowledged that they’re basically living separate lives. And Doug was this close to confessing his gambling addiction, but unfortunately, they were interrupted. Vanessa asked if he had cheated on her, but he emphatically told her no. But he really is turning to something else. It may not be another woman, but it’s something that’s taking Vanessa’s place.

The husband and wife talked about the twins coming back at some point. Should we expect additions to the show soon?
Is there hope for Vanessa and Doug? Because he may not be cheating on her, but we know Vanessa is cheating on him. And she’s fast developing feelings for Joey Armstrong (Jon Lindstrom), the casino owner who is looking to have leverage over Joey.
What did you think of Vanessa and Doug? And how about the three wins that happened on Thursday? Let us know in the comments.
