So much happened in the Tuesday, May 13 episode of Beyond the Gates, including Jan getting her say with Leslie. Leslie is showing her daughter that her love is completely conditional on Eva aligning with her and rejecting her dad. Meanwhile, Martin made a big (and wise) decision, Ted and Eva felt the freeze of being country club outsiders, Dani forced Nicole to venture out of the mansion, and Vanessa worried about Doug, who had an unpleasant conversation with Joey Armstrong.

Indecent Proposal

Doug (Jason Graham) is in trouble if he doesn’t find the money to dig himself out of the hole he created for himself with Joey (Jon Lindstrom). His poker skills are meh at best, and now he owes the casino owner more than ever. And Joey has dispensed with the vague threats. However, he gave Doug the opportunity to forgo paying the debt.

As long as he hooked him up with Vanessa’s (Lauren Buglioli) real estate company, where he can launder his money, Doug’s slate will be wiped clean. But, no, a proud Doug still refused to tell his wife about his gambling addiction. And he refused to ask her for a loan or to get her involved with this money laundering scheme of Joey’s. Funny thing is, Vanessa would completely help him if he would just say something.

Martin’s Big Decision

It looks like Martin (Brandon Claybon) is starting to think clearly. He and Vernon (Clifton Davis) met up at Orphey Gene’s, where he told his grandfather about his continued dreams. During his latest dream, didn’t it look like it involved a car of some sort and flashing lights — was it a police vehicle or more than one? Plus, what do those words he heard in his dream mean? “Let’s see what color’s your money.”

Anyway, his nightmares, plus his need to keep the Duprees and Richardsons out of the limelight, led him to give up his current dream of running for President of the United States. He felt his mom was going through too much, and the level of scrutiny that comes with a POTUS run would be too much scrutiny on the family. And what if someone uncovers his secret? Martin has calmed down and is realizing that he is lucky because he has a family that loves him unconditionally. He doesn’t want anything to change.

Orphey Gene’s Mystery Man

Who was that guy who was lurking in Orphey Gene’s? It wasn’t clear who he was spying on, but it could very well be Martin and Vernon. It may tie into whatever happened that must be kept quiet at all costs.

Nicole’s Chaotic Day Out

Dani (Karla Mosley) urged her sister to get out of her PJs and get back out there, living her best life. So, naturally, they went to have breakfast at the country club, where it wasn’t all mimosas and Eggs Benedict. Instead, it was running into Eva (Ambyr Michelle), Ted (Maurice Johnson), and Anastasia, the country club gossip. But Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) did her best to deal with the rude interruptions.

Logically, she knew Ted would want a relationship with the daughter he never knew he had, but seeing it threw her for a loop. However, she didn’t run away. She faced the demons that had been after her since the anniversary party, and she was grateful to Dani and Vanessa for supporting her through it all. But still, seeing Ted accept Eva so quickly had to hurt.

Eva and Parental Acceptance

Finally, Ted and Eva showed up at the country club. Ted insisted he was a member, so he belonged there. And she’s his daughter, so now she does, too. But the whole time Eva was there, the Duprees and Vanessa stared at them. Anastaia, the gossip, stared at them and then made a point of insulting Ava to her face.

It caused Eva to run back to her old life, the one with her mom at Orphey Gene’s. Unfortunately for her, Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant) was at her wits’ end. She continued to think of herself as the victim. And maybe she was one of the victims back in the day, but she was certainly not today. Not when, as Jan (Jerri Tubbs) told her, she came from a place of hate, and she relied on revenge to get her story out.

Leslie refused to let Eva back into her life, so Eva ran back to her dad, who accepted her and wanted to set her up with a brand new life. He’s all she has right now, and Ted locking hands with her in front of Nicole, Dani, and Vanessa sealed the deal.
