Martin and Smitty finally discovered Tyrell’s secret in the Tuesday, April 15 episode of Beyond the Gates. Meanwhile, Doug vowed to focus on work and abandon gambling. Dani lost ground to her demons. And Naomi and Bill had a breakthrough of sorts. Unfortunately, it came at a price.

Online Bullying

It was Martin (Brandon Claybon) who found out what Tyrell (Jaden Lucas Miller) had been hiding for the last few weeks. In the process, we found out a few things: Ever since Tyrell and Samantha (Najah Jackson) started attending this school, they have been getting flack for who they are. They were the congressman’s kids—the poor orphans.

The bullying escalated when the jock sent an embarrassing photo of Tyrell to the popular girl, and as a result, her boyfriend decked him. Now, the photo is making the rounds online, and it’s threatening to go even further. Martin had to make a deal with the reporter, who had a kid in the same school. He won’t print the story in return for a scoop that Martin gives him.

Tyrell wants his dads to do nothing, but that’s not Martin. He would rather take the bull by the horn and take down the system rather than sit back and do nothing. Right now, he’s not listening to anybody in his family, not even Smitty (Mike Manning). Will Martin’s controlling ways make things worse for Tyrell, or will he be able to use his power for good?

Big Breakthrough

So, it’s true. Naomi (Arielle Prepetit) removed herself from the case. She’s no longer representing the women suing her father’s firm. As disappointing as that is, she’s doing it because she’s scared it will permanently damage her relationship with her dad. And it feels like his health scare with his hand probably had something to do with it, too.

Naomi eventually admitted she loved her dad, and this was ultimately about wanting to save their relationship. Bill (Timon Kyle Durrett) looked like he couldn’t believe what he had just heard. He loved hearing those words from his daughter, whom he missed so much. After all, the reason why he didn’t quite mind dealing with the lawsuit was the fact that he got face time with Naomi.

Later, Bill had his own breakthrough. Apparently, he had been talking to the other partners. And they decided to expel Mike Davis from the firm because he turned out to be a huge liability. Let’s see if that is the case or if Mike Davis (Pierce Lackey) decides to sue Bill for wrongful termination. However, we all know there was nothing wrong with what Bill and his partners did.

Doug and Dani — Are They Broken?

Two characters dealt with their addictions. Doug McBride (Jason Graham) has gone cold turkey. He realizes he has a gambling problem. Unfortunately for him, he isn’t seeking out any help. Instead, he’s using distractions to prevent him from returning to Joey Armstrong’s casino. He’s scheduling procedure after procedure, so he’ll be busy at the hospital. Or he’ll go to the gym to workout. He’ll try anything to not think about poker. But Joey (Jon Lindstrom) is a smart and patient guy. He knows it’s just a matter of time before Doug hits the casino once again.

Meanwhile, Dani (Karla Mosley) tried to keep up a front at Kat’s (Colby Muhammad) birthday. But as soon as she got home, she hit the sauce. She drank vodka straight up, and as she grew more inebriated, she tried to recreate her modeling swagger, her fierce Naomi Campbell-level runway walk. However, she didn’t come close because she was more than tipsy. When she summoned Andre (Sean Freeman), he came over, and instead of having a good time, he had to take care of her, comfort her, and hug her while she slept.

But that last hug, she didn’t look well. She seemed broken and lost. She held on to Andre as an anchor, as comfort, but she didn’t let him see how broken she was. Dani needs help, and it may be more help than Andre can give.
