A mere glimpse at Maurice Johnson’s social media accounts and it’s clear he’s excited to join Beyond the Gates. Not only is it an opportunity to work with actors like Clifton Davis and Tamara Tunie, but the Atlanta filming location is less than three hours from his hometown of Augusta, Georgia. Apparently, the actor even passed up work in Los Angeles to stick close to home. Here’s more of what you should know about Johnson, who plays Nicole Dupree Richardson’s husband Ted.
His Early Days
Johnson, a native of Augusta, GA, earned a football scholarship to Albany University, where he graduated with a degree in Speech and Theatre. Interestingly, his time on the college debate team first sparked his passion for acting.
According to Augusta Good News, his debate coach encouraged and challenged him to use his voice. “We won a lot of awards with the debate team,” Johnson relayed. It wasn’t until after that that he pivoted from management to Speech and Theatre. And after graduating, he explored opportunities to act.

His Acting Evolution
Johnson started his acting career on the stage. Then, he transitioned to doing national commercials and indie projects. Naturally, his world eventually opened up to co-star and guest-star roles on TV. One of his first guest-star gigs was in 2012 when he appeared on CBS’s Hawaii Five-0 reboot.
Ultimately, he would appear on well-known shows like NBC’s Chicago Fire, ABCs The Catch and Nashville, OWN’s Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse, and the CW’s Vampire Diaries.
He’s also stayed booked and busy doing various big-screen and small-screen movies. According to his IMDB bio, he was in Joyful Noise, which starred Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton. And he appeared in When the Bough Breaks with Morris Chestnutt and Regina Hall.
Coming up, he’s in Operation: Aunties, which actress Wendy Raquel Robinson (The Game) directs. Tisha Campbell (Martin, Act Your Age) and Melissa De Sousa (The Best Man franchise) are the leads.

Playing a Role From the Jump
Johnson recently told Augusta Good News why he’s so grateful to be a part of a groundbreaking soap like BTG. He’s not playing a role that someone else has already played. “We’re able to create a role from the ground up,” he said.
You’ll see him creating Dr. Ted Richardson from day one. Ted’s a brilliant plastic surgeon with an ultra-exclusive private practice. Women clamor to put their faces and bodies in what they call his “blessed” hands. As far as his relationship with his wife, it’s almost too perfect. The doctor has created an impeccable life with his wife — whom he loves passionately — and sleeps well at night, secure that his past will never disrupt his perfect world.
What about Ted’s past could disrupt the ideal life he’s created? Guess we’re about to find out when Beyond The Gates premieres on CBS on February 24, 2025, at 2 pm ET / 1 pm CT.
