Once upon a time, Beyond the Gates series regular Jibre Hordges wanted to be a doctor. He even earned a B.S. in Biology from Georgia Southern University. However, his post-college path took a serious left turn when he became an actor.
Hordges was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Before he pivoted to acting, he was a science guy. He wanted to be a doctor, specifically a radiologist. In an interview with Authority Magazine, he detailed what happened to send him down a different path. Ultimately, a career in the medical field wasn’t in the cards for him.
His mom helped set him on a new path when she spotted an ad online for extras for a Jamie Foxx movie. He started out as an extra in various productions. Then, slowly but surely, by studying the craft and putting in the work, the entertainment world started opening up for him. According to Hordges, “his goal is to reach a platform where he can inspire the rest of the world to pursue their dreams with their own passions, no matter the circumstances.”

A few of Hordges’ small screen credits include BET’s The Quad, Fox’s The Resident, and ABC’s 911. But his biggest primetime role is paying Ray in four episodes of Freeform’s Grown-ish. Before he even set foot on the set of the Black-ish spinoff, he was a fan.
“What made being on this show so exciting is that when I first watched the show, I told myself I would be perfect for it. But when I first auditioned for it, I didn’t end up getting the role,” he revealed to Authority Magazine. “A couple years later, I auditioned for it again, and I ended up booking it, which goes to show that timing is everything and you’ll get the right role that fits you at the right time.”

And now the Atlanta native gets to play cop in his backyard, because Beyond the Gates films in his hometown When he got the job he expressed how much being part of this historical show means to him. In a message via his Instagram account, he said, “I’m just happy to be apart of it all. I’m soaking it all in, living in the moment, and enjoying the ride that God planned for me. 🙌🏾 If I can give 1 piece of advice, I’d say that if you have a dream, chase it and don’t give up until you reach it. No matter what, anything is possible. Continue to do the work because your breakthrough is near. I’m living proof! 🙏🏾”
On BTG, Hordges’ character, Jacob Hawthorne, is married to Naomi Hamilton-Hawthorne (Arielle Prepetit). He comes from a long line of cops and is currently a robbery and homicide detective with the Metropolitan Department of the District of Columbia. He is proud of his wife, his family, and his community. And he’s determined to seek justice for his victims.
