It happened. The first episode of CBS’ brand-new soap opera, Beyond the Gates, debuted. It provided more than a solid foundation for whatever’s about to come our way from here on out. In addition to the actors wonderfully setting the stage for this new universe, the show lived up to the hype. First, we’ll turn our attention to Nicole and Dani, sisters who live on opposite sides of the spectrum, but at the same time, you can tell the love is there.
Sister, Sister
“It never ceases to amaze me how two sisters can grow up in the same environment with the same advantages and turn out completely different.” -Anita Dupree (Tamara Tunie)
Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson
In this premiere episode, we learned that Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) is the older, less emotional Dupree sister. She’s a psychiatrist and a mom who’s about to receive the State of Maryland’s Distinguished Service Award for Psychiatry. According to Dani, she has the perfect life, which includes the perfect husband who’s never cheated on her.
She has a bit of that aloof observer thing going on for her, which probably serves her profession well. And even though she seems secure with everything about herself, she does get little digs in on her sister, which almost seems like jealousy or like she’s used to Dani getting all the attention. However, something tells us that either her life isn’t perfect or it’s about to implode. Something’s about to give, and we’ll see how she handles it. If she’ll be more put together about it or outwardly chaotic like her baby sis.

Dani Dupree Hamilton
We learned that Dani Dupree (Karla Mosley) is the highly emotional wild child and wild card of the family. At 17, she had a successful modeling career. However, at 19, she gave it all up to become Mrs. Bill Hamilton. For 30 years, she devoted her life to him and their family. He became a high-powered attorney, and despite having a beautiful family, he proceeded to cheat on Dani multiple times over the years.
Dani knew about the rampant cheating yet stayed in the marriage. But Dani and Bill (Timon Durrett) are now divorced, and Dani has to experience humiliation after humiliation. Bill is marrying her daughter’s best friend, Hayley (Marquita Goings). The Hamiltons were everything to Hayley. They gave her the family she didn’t have. And now she’s marrying Dani’s husband at the Fairmont Crest Country Club that the Dupree family built. On top of that, Bill and Hayley have bought a house and are moving into Fairmont Crest — their territory.
Bill’s betrayal might send Dani on a rampage we haven’t seen since Angela Bassett’s character in Waiting to Exhale.

Sisters United
At the country club, the sisters quarreled and threw digs at each other. Nicole and Dani didn’t seem to be on the same page at all. However, when Hayley reentered the building, Dani confronted her one more time. For some reason, Hayley’s youth showed. She didn’t quite comprehend how much damage she’s done. If she did, she wouldn’t expect Dani to let her anger go just like that.
So Dani countered Hayley’s naivete with a verbal teardown and a slap. And what did Nicole and the rest of the family do? Even though they pleaded with her to look the other way and go about her own life, They stood up for Dani. Nicole was right there, and she had her sister’s back. It was a wonderful moment to see.
