This week, Tamara Tunie’s press tour for CBS’ new soap Beyond the Gates included visiting The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. During her visit, she talked about why BTG is the only show that would bring her back to daytime. If you recall, she played attorney Jessica Griffin on As the World Turns.
Tunie’s Talk Show Appearance
During her appearance, Tunie expressed excitement about being back on her OG network, CBS, and how proud she was to be part of Beyond the Gates. “The only show that would bring me back to daytime television was this show,” she revealed. “And it is because it is historic in its existence. It’s the first daytime drama with a central family that’s African-American and an African-American family of affluence, power, generational wealth, beauty, talent, and it’s breaking the color barrier. It’s a glass ceiling show.”

But she assures that as classy as her character, Anita Dupree, is, at the end of the day, this is daytime. Things are going to get dirty. “Listen, it’s a soap opera, so as pulled up and elegant as I am, there’s always time for some mess. It’s going to get messy. It’s going to get messy,” Tunie teased.

The Law & Order: SVU actress also talked about how she was able to play SVU’s resident medical examiner so beautifully and realistically. It’s because she grew up in a funeral home — her parents were morticians. She also told Colbert about how she got her first Broadway gig, which had her on stage with the great Lena Horne and worked on the late great CBS soap ATWT for over 15 years.
