Most stars don’t mind signing an autograph or posing for a selfie with a respectful fan, but Justin Hartley, star of This Is Us, was reminded recently that not all devotees keep boundaries or politeness at the top of their lists!
Hartley, who played Adam on The Young and the Restless, earning a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in the process, recently recounted to GoodHousekeeping that one admirer of his crossed the line!
The actor told the website that he was dining in Chicago with a close group of friends when a fan interrupted them. He’s not totally clear on what the woman looked like, but her over-the-top behavior is, sadly, something he’s not likely to forget.
Hartley says the woman was a stranger to him, but it was clear she recognized him and started “screaming, going crazy,” the actor recalled, adding, “She ran over and started kissing me.”
He told her to step back as she had gotten into his personal space and noted to her that “If I did that to you, I would be in prison…And now that I”m trying to teach you life lessons, but I feel like this is a really good one for you.”
The good news is that the woman, Hartley recalled, appeared to be remorseful and foolish over her actions.
Then, she asked for a selfie — a request that shocked Hartley given the woman’s earlier inappropriate actions. Her wish made it seem like his advice to her had fallen on deaf ears.
In light of what happened, Hartley says he refused, which prompted the woman to call him something unflattering.
“I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,'” Hartley said.
This is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.
