Lucy Coe may be celebrating the relaunch of her beloved Deception Cosmetics but actress Lynn Herring certain has another reason to be festive.
That’s because she was born on September 22, 1958, in Enid, Oklahoma which means that this talented performer is turning 61 years old today! Herring was crowned Miss Virginia USA in 1977 and competed for the title of Miss USA that same year.
She was the fourth runner up and, despite an interest in the performing arts world, Herring graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in psychology.
Herring’s first acting role was an uncredited cameo in the film Roller Boogie and she persevered through bit pits and guest-starring roles on popular primetime series including Quince, M.E., Matt Houston, Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer, Hotel and T.J. Hooker.
In 1986, Herring was cast on ABC’s General Hospital and introduced through a storyline reminiscent of the 1957 film Witness for the Prosecution. Herring’s character, drab librarian Lucy Coe, gave testimony that damned defendant Kevin O’Conner but eventually broke down and admitted his innocence. However, in a twist ending it was revealed that the two were co-conspirators and lovers who fooled the justice system.
Herring’s part was initially written to be short term but she so impressed EP Gloria Monty and the show’s writers that they continued to plot story for the character of Lucy who morphed into GH’s top vixen. Herring exited the part in 1992 to take a lucrative job on NBC’s Days of Our Lives.
However, Herring’s new role, Lisanne Gardner, was never fully developed and after less than a year the actress asked to be let out of her contract. She returned to GH in the role of Lucy and remained there until the character was spun off into sister series Port Charles.
Herring continued to play the part until the cancellation of Port Charles in 2003 and after briefly returning to GH for one episode she retired from acting until 20009. That year she returned to daytime in the part of Audrey Coleman on CBS’ As the World Turns.
Another brief period of retirement followed but in 2012, Herring once again accepted an offer to return to GH as Lucy and she has remained there as a recurring guest making frequent appearances we all love.
