Seven Things We Love About Big Little Lies Season 2

Big Little Lies returned for its second season last night and it didn’t disappoint. Here are seven things we love about the HBO sudsy nighttime soap opera’s Season 2 premiere!

Cold Little Heart
Some shows change up their themes or eliminate opening credits altogether, which can be a mistake. The producers of BLL kept the Michael Kiwanuka theme from Season 1. The haunting tune hypnotizes audiences and lulls them into the show and into the lives of the characters.

Meryl Streep
The show added Oscar-winner Meryl Streep to the cast as Mary Louise, the mother of the late Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård), the abusive husband of Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman). Mary Louise wants to know the truth about how her son died. Did you flinch too when she released that primal yell at the dinner table?

Zingers
The most important element in a great series is its story. BLL adds a delicious icing to its story “cake” with tasty lines of dialogue. “I find little people to be untrustworthy,” Mary Louise told Madeline. “You are going to college because I say so!” Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) informed her daughter Abigail (Kathryn Newton).

Hurricane Madeline
Speaking of Madeline, Witherspoon hasn’t missed a beat stepping back into Madeline Martha Mackenzie’s fashionable wardrobe and neurotic personality. Most people know they’re in for a tongue-lashing when they encounter her, but they know better than to try to avoid her. Madeline loves to get what she wants!

The Kids Are All Right
While primetime soap fans in the 1980s had to get used to multiple Christopher Ewings (Dallas), all the young actors from Season 1 remain: Iain Armitage (Young Sheldon) as Ziggy; Darby Camp as Chloe; Chloe Coleman as Skye; Ivy George as Amabella; and Nicholas Crovetti as Max and Cameron Crovetti as Josh.

Location, Location, Location
Producers took advantage of the beautiful California coast to shoot locations for season 2 of BLL. The picturesque scenery serves as a contrast to some of the ugly feelings many of the characters are trying to contain. Did you get a load of that awesome backdrop of the roaring ocean as Renata (Laura Dern) posed for her powerful woman photos?

Cliffhangers
Spoiler Alert! As viewers who saw the season 2 premiere, Mary Louise is getting more suspicious about exactly what happened to her son while Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) is contemplating confessing all. Don’t miss next week’s episode to see what happens next!

Big Little Lies airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
