Sara Ramirez is a very talented actress, singer, and stage performer. She is not only known for playing the iconic Callie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy for many seasons, but she’s also starred in a number of iconic Broadway plays.

In the Beginning
Ramirez was born in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, which is in northwestern Mexico. She lived there until her parents divorced when she was just 8 years old. She then went to live with her mother in San Diego, which is where she first pursued her interest in theater.
Julliard Grad
Ramirez started doing theater in high school and was eventually recommended to audition for the prestigious Julliard. She got in and attended Julliard, where she pursued her love of acting and singing.
Award Winner
After starring in a number of Broadway shows as well as guest spots on primetime and a brief role on the New York soap, As the World Turns, Ramirez landed her breakout role as Lady of the Lake in Broadway’s Spamalot. She won the 2005 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.
Pick of the Litter
Top executives at ABC offered Ramirez a role in any ABC show she wanted after they saw her performance in Spamalot. She ended up picking Grey’s Anatomy because she was already a fan of the show.
Member of LGBTQ Community
After playing Callie Torres, a bisexual woman, on Grey’s Anatomy for many seasons, Ramirez decided to come out as bisexual herself in October 2016. She quickly joined Madame Secretary as Kat Sandoval.
