There were many secrets throughout the first season of Big Little Lies and one of the big ones was why Jane Champion (Shailene Woodley) decided to move to Monterey, as well as the troubles in Madeline’s (Reese Witherspoon) marriage.
Executive producer David E. Kelley discusses the characters of Jane and Madeline and the truths they’re hiding from the world.
“We were suggesting danger, that Jane had secrets, and some of them may be dark. The way we see life through Jane’s prism may not be completely accurate. So we were inviting the audience to ask, ‘Is this real or is this Jane’s perception?’” Kelley says in the clip.
