She’s not back as Sami in Salem yet, but Days of Our Lives fans can still see Alison Sweeney. The actress is starring in a new Hallmark Movies & Mysteries project — Chronicle Mysteries: The Deep End!

Sweeney reprises her role as Alex McPherson, who hosts Recovered, a true-crime podcast. Her latest case focuses on the death of a man whose widow is set to be convicted of his murder. Alex, who’s certain the woman is innocent, receives assistance from Drew Godfrey (Benjamin Ayres), as she attempts to crack the case!

“We’re really excited about The Deep End,” Sweeney tells Soap Hub. “We’re taking Chronicle Mysteries a little deeper this year. You’re getting a little more insight into Alex’s character and the relationship that she and Drew are developing so, it’s really fun.”

The Deep End is written by veteran daytime writer, Melissa Salmons, who’s been on the writing team of DAYS, The Young and the Restless, Guiding Light, and other soaps.

While Sweeney hopes to get back to directing daytime when schedules allow, she says she has plenty to keep her busy right now. “I’m busy producing,” she says. “In this format, it works for me to produce and star [in projects], I’ll be editing and in post-production, on one movie while we’re shooting the next one. You find yourself wearing a lot of hats!”

Sweeney adds that she has no trips back to Salem lined up but she would not have missed the one earlier this year in which Sami returned to pay respects to her late grandmother Caroline (the late Peggy McCay) for anything in the world.

Peggy was a really important person in my life,” Sweeney shares. “She was a grandmother to me. Christie [Clark, ex-Carrie] and I were so affected by the woman Peggy was and the strength she exuded. She was a woman and a person in this industry for so many decades. We were brought up looking up to her. Watching her makes a person who they become.

“Peggy and I had amazing scenes together. She was such a great actress and she brought it every day whether it was an incredibly intense scene or if Caroline was serving chowder in the pub. She gave 100% and set by example. You just took in what she did.”

Days of Our Lives airs weekdays on NBC. Check local listings for air times. Chronicle Mysteries: The Deep End premieres Sunday, August 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.
