As Det. Rey Rosales on The Young and the Restless, Jordi Vilaususo has his hands full as Rey supports Sharon through her cancer ordeal and lends support to sister Lola, as needed. And if there’s criminal activity going on in Genoa City, you can bet Rey will be on the case!

There was a time, however, when Rey was even busier! His estranged wife Mia (Noemi Gonazlez), his brother Arturo (Jason Canela), and Rey were in a developing love triangle as Mia was pregnant — and initially wasn’t sure who the dad was. When YR decided to trim the cast, Mia and Arturo were written off the canvas after it was revealed that Arturo was the expectant father.

“You always want more time,” Vilasuso recently told TV Insider, gratefully acknowledging the screen-time the story had for as long as it did. “We had maybe five months working together. I felt so connected to both Noemi and Jason. I know a lot of people have their opinions about how [quickly] Mia was introduced, which I completely understand. But I loved the story. I know how connected I was to Jason and Noemi. It was bittersweet.

“I respect what Josh [Griffith, head writer/co-executive producer] and Tony [Morina, executive producer] put together,” Vilasuso says, regarding The Young and the Restless creative team bringing the storyline to an end (for now). “They put a bow on it. One of the saving graces is I still have Sasha [Calle, Lola] as my sister. She’s part of my family. I check in with her once a week.”

Off-screen, Vilasuso says he and Canela are still in touch and remain good pals. “That’s my ‘brother from another mother,’” the actor adds. “I love that kid. He’s going to do some great stuff. I’m grateful to have met him.

“When I went in to read for the role the first time, he walked in and talked to the [Y&R] casting director… she introduced me to him. When he walked out, he said, ‘I could see that guy playing my brother.’” The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
