After bringing Grand Hotel to ABC last season, The Young and the Restless alum Eva Longoria is developing another serial drama for the alphabet network titled Chicano, which is inspired by the Richard Vasquez novel of the same name.

New Latinx Series For Eva Longoria

Other names attached to the series, according to Deadline, are Oscar-winning actor Forester Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), and Natalie Chaidez, the showrunner of Queen of the South.

The TV series Chicano, written by Chaidez, tells the story of the Sandovals, a Mexican-American family that immigrates to Los Angeles in order to pursue the American Dream. The time period of the show goes from 1920 to the present day.

“Chicano is just the first of many projects that we expect from Eva and Ben [Spector] as we look to ramp up our slate of Latinx programming. As part of our studio family, they are valuable partners in helping us expand our commitment to compelling stories for underrepresented communities,” said Karey Burke, president, ABC Entertainment.

“With Forest, Nina [Yang Bongiovi], Natalie and Doug [Pray] also at the helm of this project, we know we have the perfect powerhouse team to bring this Mexican-American family’s story to life and cultivate the next generation of Latinx storytelling.”

As YR viewers have seen in some of the recent classic re-airings, Longoria played Isabella Braña, a woman who tried, but ultimately failed, to come between Paul (Doug Davidson) and Christine (Lauralee Bell). Isabella went off the deep end and faked her death, hoping to frame Christine for her murder. That failed and Isabella tried to kill a drugged Christine when she was in the bathtub.

Isabella gave birth to Paul’s son, Ricky (Peter Porte), who grew up with her parents. He later returned to Genoa City. Alas, like his mother, Ricky had a breakdown and committed a violent act. Paul was forced to kill a knife-wielding Ricky before he could harm Eden (Jessica Heap), Michael’s sister. Paul visited his ex to break the news of their son’s fate. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
