Mariah almost told Tessa why she was upset on the June 9 episode of The Young and the Restless. But, in the end, Mariah chickened out. All we saw, in the end, was a black and white flashback of Mariah getting drunk with a much older mystery man. Tessa didn’t get even that much. We still don’t know what exactly happened. But we’re pretty sure we know why exactly it happened.
Older and Wiser
Mariah (Camryn Grimes) had a very, very screwed up past. She was kidnapped at birth from her teen mom, Sharon (Sharon Case), and raised in a cult.
Ian (Ray Wise), the man she grew up thinking of as a father figure, ended up drugging and trying to marry her in order to steal Mariah’s money. You don’t need to get on a psychiatrist’s couch to know that’s going to send you reeling.
Fly in the Ointment
Sure, Mariah seemed to have gotten her happy ending: Reuniting with mom Sharon, marrying Tessa (Cait Fairbanks), adopting their baby girl, Aria….
How is Aria doing, by the way? Does she still have hearing issues? Did she adjust to her cochlear implants? Is she talking yet? Walking? Is she a teenager?…. But, anyway, all that wasn’t enough to keep Mariah from spiraling after Ian’s death.
Slip and Slide
It’s not a surprise that when Mariah — whether consciously or unconsciously — began to self-destruct, she made a beeline for an older, somewhat creepy man. (Or, at least, let an older, somewhat creepy man find her.)
Whether Mariah slept with him, killed him, both, or neither, this is all still Ian’s fault. No matter how hard she fought to get away and forget him, Ian is still controlling Mariah from beyond the grave. Whether she does exactly what he would have wanted, or the exact opposite, she remains under Ian’s power. And until she can shake that, Mariah will never be fully free.
