It may be hard to believe but The Young and the Restless was on the air for over a decade before it won its first Daytime Emmy in an acting category. The year was 1985 and YR walked into the Waldorf Astoria where the ceremony was held with three acting nods — including one for Beth Maitland.

The other acting nominees were Terry Lester (then-Jack) for Outstanding Lead Actor and Tracey Bregman (Lauren) in the newly created category of Outstanding Ingenue in a Drama Series.

YR went two for three with Maitland and Bregman winning. As Supporting Actress was called out first, Maitland became YR’s first acting Daytime Emmy winner. “That moment [in which I won] is frozen in time for me,” Maitland recently told TV Insider.

“I remember where I was, who I was with…,” she recalls. “All the nominees were at banquet tables. I was sitting right next to Terry… I remember what I was wearing. I remember losing my shoe going up the stairs! My acting teacher, Patricia George, later said to me, ‘Beth! That was your Cinderella moment.’ That actually changed everything in terms of how I felt about it.”

Beth Maitland losing a shoe on the way to the stage inspired another winner to lose their footwear! “Later in the show, Kim Zimmer [Reva, Guiding Light] took both of her shoes off and threw them up into the air when she went up on stage [after winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series]!” Maitland says. “We were on a carpet in the room, but then we had to walk up some slippery stairs. They were temporary and not too stable. Nowadays, they have someone standing there to help winners up the stairs.”

Don’t miss this year’s Daytime Emmys set to air on CBS on Friday, June 26 on CBS at 8 p.m. ET. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
