Never one to rest on his laurels, actor/producer Thad Luckinbill — best known to daytime devotees as The Young and the Restless’ JT Hellstrom — has a brand-new project scheduled to go into production next year.

Thad Luckinbill: The Producer

According to Deadline, the feature film, titled Devotion and starring Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, will tell the real-life story of two elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots during the Korean War.

Described as an aerial war epic, Devotion is based on Adam Mako’s best selling book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice. Majors, an indie darling following his starring turn in The Last Black Man in San Francisco, will play Jessie Brown opposite Powell’s Tom Hudner.

A more detailed synopsis of the plot follows: Set in an era fraught with racial disparity, Brown became the first black man in U.S. Naval history to become a fighter pilot, while Hudner decided to forgo Harvard to join the Navy. Despite their differences, an unbreakable bond was forged, and their heroic sacrifices would ultimately make them the Navy’s most celebrated wingmen.

Devotion will no doubt be the next great triumph for Black Label Media, the production company that Luckinbill formed alongside his twin brother Trent, and Molly Smith. Among BLM’s biggest hits is the Emily Blunt lead Sicario, Reese Witherspoon’s The Good Lie, and Demolition, which counted Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi Watts, and Chris Cooper amongst its cast.

Luckinbill — who also served as an executive producer on the six-Oscar statuette winning La La Land — last appeared on The Young and the Restless in March of 2019. In his final weeks, the character of JT was revealed to be suffering from a brain tumor, explaining his rash of violent, obsessive, and murderous outbursts.

Despite the diagnosis, JT accepted a jail sentence for his attack on Victor’s life and was shipped off to serve it. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
