Josh Griffith has created many interesting couples on The Young and the Restless. The latest pairing of Phyllis and Matt has caused a stir with soap fans.

Key Takeaways

  • Phyllis and Matt have formed a connection.
  • The two villains could create trouble for Genoa City with their romance.
  • Josh Griffith believes that Matt and Phyllis are similar to a certain One Life to Live couple.

A Phatt Romance

Y&R villain Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) is on the road to redemption after losing his memory. With Matt turning his life around, it’s time for romance. And it just so happens a certain redhead has caught his attention.

Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) is one of Genoa City’s famous villains turned heroine. However, Phyllis’ recent actions of taking over Newman Enterprises have made her the town pariah.

With Phyllis and Matt having similar backgrounds, it’s no surprise these two baddies are attracted to each other. Matt and Phyllis’ budding romance is drawing many comparisons to OLTL’s Todd (Howarth) and Blair (Kassie DePaiva).

Llanview’s notorious criminal and his vixen bride became one of soap’s most popular supercouples. Todd and Blair’s complex relationship and scheming made for enticing drama.

Griffith, who was at OLTL during the height of Todd and Blair’s romance, called the pairing “gold.” Now, he’s using the magic of Todd and Blair for Y&R’s Matt and Phyllis.

”It just works so well,” Griffith told Soap Opera Digest. “And I think we have a similar dynamic here with Matt and Phyllis, in that it is unexpected, but at the same time feels almost inevitable.”

Will Phatt Be Y&R’s New Supercouple?

Matt and Phyllis, aka Phatt, have received mixed reactions from fans. Some are against the pairing, while others can’t wait to see what’s next for the couple.

There’s no denying that Howarth and Stafford have chemistry. But it’s how the storyline goes for Matt and Phyllis that will determine if they have potential as a couple.

Matt is trying to redeem himself after his memory loss and seems to be keeping his promise. Meanwhile, Phyllis is seeking another fresh start now that her Newman reign is over. With the town pariahs wanting to start anew, it’d be an interesting story for Matt and Phyllis, bringing out the good in each other.

However, Matt and Phyllis excel at being villains, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them return to being baddies. They have a common enemy in Victor (Eric Braeden), so the couple teaming up to get revenge on The Mustache would be juicy drama.
