Holden is the newest member of the Winters family on The Young and the Restless. Stephanie’s return revealed a long and shocking secret. Holden was her and Malcolm’s son. Holden being related to Malcolm was a surprising twist, however, it wasn’t the original plan the show had in store.
Key Takeaways
- Holden first came to Genoa City as a Damian imposter.
- A romance between Holden and Lily was teased, but never came to fruition.
- The writers wanted Holden to stay in GC and came up with the Malcolm storyline.
Ties To Genoa City
When Holden (Nathan Owens) first arrived in Genoa City, he was impersonating Damian (Jermaine Rivers). However, his stunt was exposed when Amy (Valarie Pettiford) revealed the real Damian.
After his scheme, Holden decided to stay in GC and connected with Lily (Christel Khalil). A romance was teased between the two, but it soon became apparent that it wasn’t going to work. Y&R head writer/producer Josh Griffith recalled watching a Lily and Holden scene and not sensing any chemistry.
“I wasn’t seeing it romantically because I’m fixated on Lily and Cane,” Griffith told Soap Opera Digest. Although a Holden and Lily romance didn’t work, Griffith still wanted to keep the character around.
Griffith started bouncing ideas around and came up with making Holden Malcolm’s (Shemar Moore) son. Then it was time to brainstorm how to make the connection possible.
“When I looked back into history, I thought, ‘Well, if you look at the timing, and he had this relationship with the character that Vivica Fox played, and I said, ‘I wonder if we can get Vivica back as well.’ And then it all just fell together.”
Luckily, Fox and Moore were on board with the idea and ready to return. Now, fans are getting acquainted and reacquainted with this new family.
Family Life
Holden’s life was turned upside down upon learning that Malcolm was his dad. But the father and son had little time to connect because of Malcolm’s health issues.
Malcolm’s diagnosis with aplastic anemia had the Winters family and Holden rallying around him. Although Holden wasn’t a bone marrow match, he was by Malcolm’s side throughout the transplant and his recovery. With Malcolm on the mend, he’s back in Genoa City to spend time with his son.
Holden and Malcolm have a lot to discuss as they finally get a chance to connect. Although it’s a big adjustment for Holden, he’s already being welcomed into the Winters family by his dad and his sister Lily.
