She only played the part briefly, but the honor of being the first Sharon Collins on The Young and the Restless belongs to Monica Potter of Parenthood fame.
Now, Potter is back at CBS for her next series, Wisdom of the Crowd. She plays Alex Hale, a congresswoman, and the ex-wife of Jeffrey Tanner, who’s played by Jeremy Piven. Jeffrey and Alex’s daughter was murdered and Jeffrey, a tech wizard, devises technology to help find the real killer.
Congress Is In Session
“This is a show I never thought of signing on for but it’s CBS,” says Potter, “and Ted [Humphrey, the show’s creator] is the best writer ever — next to Jason Katims (Parenthood!) Alex wants nothing to do with Jeffrey.
She believes their daughter’s killers have already been found. But he starts to dig things up and he can’t leave it alone. Deep down, Alex does want to know, but she doesn’t want to deal with it. We’ll see the journey with the two of them.”

“Our mission,” she says, “is about giving back and creating jobs for those who want to learn a skill or a trade and creating great products. It’s like my fourth child and why I took some time off [from acting].”
Meeting Michael Muhney
Potter left Y&R long before Sharon married Nick (Joshua Morrow), let alone moved onto a relationship with his brother Adam. (Heck, Adam hadn’t even been born yet when Potter debuted as Sharon!)
But, independent of Y&R, the actress is pals with Michael Muhney (ex-Adam). Are they still in touch? “Yes, but I haven’t seen him in a while,” Potter says. “I see him here and there.”
Wisdom Of The Crowd debuts on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 8:30 p.m. on CBS.
