If Devon isn’t careful, he’s liable to lose Abby as his wife on The Young and the Restless. His justifiable anger over the kidnapping of their son, Dom, is spiraling into a spite-fueled vendetta. In the Tuesday, April 21 episode, Abby realized that his request for the court to review Mariah’s case had an ulterior motive. It shocked her to learn the lengths he’s willing to go to see Mariah put behind bars.

Key Takeaways

  • Devon’s plan took Abby by surprise
  • The reason Devon and Abby aren’t on the same page about Mariah
  • How his anger could end their marriage

Devon Wants Retribution on Young and the Restless

While Devon’s scheme is one born from trauma, it’s still a step farther than Abby (Melissa Ordway) thought he’d take. His handling of the court’s decision to send Mariah to a mental health facility has caused friction in their marriage.

Abby’s begun to avoid him. This could worsen as Devon (Bryton James) feels his pain and terror aren’t being met with action to end it. If it does, Abby might have to make a decision that’s best for her and possibly for Dom by walking away from Devon.

Devon doesn’t look like he’s been sleeping. His anger over Mariah’s (Camryn Grimes) actions has been taking him for a ride. He believes she basically got a slap on the wrist. Mariah was sentenced to a mental health facility, not a prison. While she can’t leave without satisfactorily completing her treatment, the law didn’t throw the book at her.

The court not advising Devon and Abby about its decision hasn’t set right with them. But while Abby has chosen to focus on the much-needed help Mariah is getting, Devon can’t. He only sees Mariah as a threat to their family now. He’s paranoid that she’ll fake her recovery. That she’ll be released and steal Dom (Ethan Ray Clark) again. But this time, they won’t ever see their son again.

His Plan to Put Mariah in Jail

It’s getting to the point where Devon may stop caring about his own behavior. He’s been forthright about petitioning the court to review the outcome of Mariah’s case. He’s tried to persuade Abby to his point of view to no avail. But his request is more than a father’s plea for an overturned verdict.

Devon has set up a pressure-cooker situation for Mariah. He told Abby that he’s not hoping for Mariah to crack under it. However, he has laid the perfect trap for her to fall into. It’s clear Devon wants to prove that she can’t be trusted. If push comes to shove, it’s his belief that she’ll show her true colors. That she is a danger to his family and that she should be in prison.

He knows the review may not turn out the way he wants. That’s not the point. Testing Mariah’s resolve and her sanity is. In Devon’s eyes, if she does something desperate because of his decision, then he was right all along.

Abby Comes to Mariah’s Defense

At one point in this storyline, Abby was just as angry as Devon. She didn’t think Mariah should be walking around town like she’d done nothing wrong. But time, and a growing understanding of Mariah’s plight, have begun to heal her wounds. She’s now more receptive to the court deciding Mariah needed treatment, not punishment.

She and Devon keep coming back to the same sticking point. He can only see Mariah as the crime she committed. But Abby sees her as the woman who gave birth to Dom. She’s factored in Mariah’s struggle over the trauma she carries.

Abby has also considered that their son is safe. And that in the past, Mariah removed herself from his life when she felt she was too attached. She has always tried to put Dom first, regardless of her own feelings.

An Unsettled Marriage

Abby is no longer holding onto the hurt Mariah caused. But watching Devon sink into his pain has caused her to pull away from him. He shared the news that Holden (Nathan Owens) and Lily (Christel Khalil) are siblings, but she didn’t respond.

Their interactions are getting increasingly tense. Abby doesn’t know how to handle Devon’s anger, and it’s causing a rift.

She’s had to field responses from Mariah’s family about his actions, while trying not to publicly be out of step with her husband. But she agrees with them. Devon is creating a situation that’s untenable. Abby loves him, but as her nerves fray, she may decide she needs space. Especially if Devon’s plan backfires.

Devon thinks he’s doing what’s best for their family. But Abby doesn’t agree that instigating a situation that could cause Mariah to spiral accomplishes that goal. It’s only going to hurt her, and that’s not what Abby wants. And if the court affirms the verdict or Mariah doesn’t take a desperate action, it could cause Devon to push harder for what he wants.

An extended vendetta against Mariah could turn Abby against him, too. If Devon continues down this path, he may lose the very thing he’s trying to protect—the family he loves above everything.
