Summer and Kyle are back together (again) on The Young and the Restless. This should be the best time of their lives. So why does it feel like the show is going out of its way to make viewers actively root against this adorable pairing?

The Young and the Restless Commentary: Past Imperfect

We spent over a year being told that Kyle’s (Michael Mealor) soulmate was Lola (Sasha Calle). Kyle was so desperate to save her life that he agreed to marry a blackmailing Summer (Hunter King). They were supposed to stay married for at least a year, but Kyle couldn’t stand to be away from his true love, dumped Summer, and went running back to Lola.

They wed. They talked about fancy vacations, houses, babies. And then, one day, Kyle woke up and decided Summer was the woman he really loved all along. Oh… k. That was a 180. But fans went with it. Yay, Skyle!

The Marriage Plot

They were set to get married. But then Summer ran off, didn’t tell Kyle why, and spent weeks lurking around town, grinding her teeth because Kyle didn’t appear to be suffering enough. Was that supposed to make them a rootable couple?

It must have because they reunited as quickly as they’d broken up. And were soon faced with another obstacle: new girl in town, Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope).

Threat Level: 0

Except that Sally wasn’t interested in Kyle – no matter how much Summer insisted she was. And, yes, she was interested in Sally’s job. But Sally didn’t come from the most powerful family in town, which means she hadn’t been handed Summer’s opportunities, which means she didn’t get Summer’s job.

Final Tally

YR obviously wants us to be on Summer and Kyle’s side, and the actors are doing their best to bring sense to a nonsensical storyline. But, no matter how good-looking and charismatic King and Mealor may be, it’s hard to root for a pair of trust-fund brats ganging up on a young woman without anything close to their resources.

Why are the show’s writers making these lovebirds so… unlovable? The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
