Peter Bergman has reminded viewers of The Young and the Restless why he is one of daytime’s most celebrated actors. Jack Abbott, Bergman’s Genoa City alter-ego, recently drew a hard line in the sand with Ashland Locke during a confrontation. Bergman’s performance not only let Locke know he faced a formidable opponent but also earned the actor Performer of the Week honors for YR from Soap Hub.

Jack has stepped up in order to protect his son Kyle (Michael Mealor) and his (likely?) grandson Harrison (Kellen Enriquez) by giving them refuge in the Abbott mansion. He’s even invited Harrison’s mother Tara (Elizabeth Leiner) to stay there, too, and has lent her a sympathetic ear and laid out the facts, noting that Ashland (Richard Burgi) is Harrison’s father in the eyes of the law.

Jack also told Tara that Kyle is not one to back down from a fight, especially where family is concerned. We see where Kyle gets this trait. Later, at Society, Bergman’s performance kicked up a notch or three as the Abbott patriarch squared off against Ashland, letting the media mogul know in no uncertain terms that he was going to protect his family.

It’s clear that Ashland is angry about Tara’s fling with Kyle, but confronting Jack showed him that he’s in for a fight if he goes after the Abbotts. Jack went on the offense a bit, pointing out to Ashland that he’s hardly an innocent party in what’s transpired.

Ashland ordered Jack to stay out of his business so that he could deal with Tara in his own way. Jack was having none of that! “The way you stayed out of my business when you put my company and everything my family has worked for in jeopardy because of some paranoid whim that your wife may have had an affair with my son?” Jack rhetorically shot back.

Ashland tried to counter that assertion, but Jack wasn’t quite finished! “Don’t even try to deny it,” the cosmetics king countered. “Whatever your wife may have done, whatever it is that has you all lit up, that’s your problem. Do not drag me, my company, or my family into your personal problems, and don’t you try to pull what you did last time. I am on to you,” Jack added. He said that he gave Ashland a pass because of his recent heart attack, but Jack’s compassion only goes so far.

“Don’t mistake compassion for weakness,” Jack warned. “Do not underestimate my determination to protect what is mine…you may have a reputation for ruthlessness but don’t make the mistake of thinking anyone else is not capable of it — should it be necessary.”

Ashland doesn’t appear to be the type of guy who’s going to walk away over his wife’s betrayal. However, as Peter Bergman has reminded us, Jack is equally determined to save or do whatever it takes to protect his loved ones! The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS.
