During its eight seasons, Carl has been through quite a lot for a teenage boy on The Walking Dead. He lost his home, his mother, his security, friends, an eye, and he almost lost his arm.
Negan ordered Rick to cut his son’s arm off right then and there to prove his loyalty, but Rick couldn’t manage to do it.

Negan then forced Rick to swear his loyalty to him, saying he answered only to him and belongs to him. Out of fear for his son, Rick did just that, although it seemed so out of character.
