John J. York is best known for playing Mac Scorpio on General Hospital, a role he has also played on the dearly departed soaps Port Charles, All My Children, and GH: Night Shift. York has also guest-starred on shows such as Veronica Mars, Even Stevens, 21 Jump Street, Dynasty, and Family Ties. Soap Hub caught up with York, and he shared what life has been like for him recently.
Exclusive Interview: John J. York
Have you had the chance to sneak away and have any fun recently?
John J. York: I have had the opportunity to play some golf now and then – unfortunately my high handicap has stayed the same.
Is there anything you wish you’d accomplished these past few months?
The only thing I wish I could have accomplished these past few months would have been to make a 4, 5, or even 6 on the 1st par 4 hole in a golf tournament I played in. I can report I made a 9 – yikes!
What have you learned about yourself these past months?
Not that much – I think I know pretty much all there is to know.
It was great seeing you make your annual Nurses Ball appearance on General Hospital last year; what production number was your favorite?
Too close to call, but I always love James Patrick Stewart [Valentin]. He’s very talented.
What is your favorite overall performance during Nurses Ball?
Lynn Herring [Lucy] is always my favorite performance – no matter what she’s doing – at the Nurses Ball!
Is there a song you’d love to stand front and center and do your own solo at the Nurses Ball?
I would LOVE to stand front and center and sing the ABC’s song at the Nurses Ball. I’ve sung it over one million times to my grandson and granddaughter over the past three years…I have it down!!! I would never mention that to the producers because I have some other great ideas that would get me tossed out of their office!

What is your workout routine, and has it changed from what it used to be?
I haven’t changed my workout routine, I walk a couple miles in the canyon, do some pushups at home and that’s it!
Favorite sports team of all time?
The U.S. hockey team that beat Russia in the Olympics!
Have you found any new hobbies or projects?
No, I’m too busy putting off all the projects I have been putting off up to now!
What’s the best advice your mom ever gave you?
I can hear my mom saying it to me right now: ‘You better learn how to take criticism.’ She was right and it was great advice!
Is there one trip or adventure you took with your dad that stands out more than others?
I’d say all the car rides to all my football games and baseball games, him always telling me to relax and just do the best I can. And when the games were over, no matter what the result, always being positive and encouraging!
What is Your favorite way to spend the weekend, usually? Favorite way to spend the weekend… with the grandkids, naturally!
