New people discover every day what we already know – that there’s a wonderful world of soap operas out there to get lost in. Unlike primetime, which has dramas, comedies, adventure, and other genres, soaps have it all!
But they aren’t necessarily an easy thing to simply jump into watching. Soap Hub wondered what longtime fans would tell newbies just starting to watch and here are your answers.
It’s an Addiction!
After over 12,000 votes were tallied, 52% would warn a new person just jumping in to beware – once you start, you can’t stop! There are fans who have been watching their favorite soaps since Day 1 and others who started more recently – but they can’t stop.
You fall for your favorites like Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) and his children on The Young and the Restless (YR) and you have to keep up with his latest machinations. Ditto for Eric Forrester (John McCook) on The Bold and the Beautiful (BB).

Oh the Melodrama!
It seems that 46% want to warn you that there’s a lot of melodrama so don’t complain when you see it. Sure, Sam (Kelly Monaco) is hovering near death after shooting her husband’s best friend on General Hospital (GH), shocking him and us. Just go with it.
Or when Chad (Billy Flynn) tells his ex-wife (but love of his life) that she should stay dead this time (long story—don’t ask) right before she pushes him out of the way of a killer car, meant for her new husband on Days of Our Lives (DOOL). It’s normal!
Then Again…
Meanwhile only 2% had other ideas they wanted to warn a newbie about. Things like stories drag out – while another person says they don’t. Another, obviously nursing a broken heart, warns that you shouldn’t expect your favorites to stay. Meanwhile, others just said welcome – and enjoy.
