Pets can never be replaced, but some feel that giving another animal a home and/or some help and love after they’ve lost a beloved four-legged friend is a way to honor a dog or cat that’s gone to the Rainbow Bridge.

That’s certainly how Rebecca Staab (ex-Elizabeth, Port Charles; ex-Jessie, Guiding Light) was feeling after the tragic loss of her and boyfriend, William deVry‘s (Julian, General Hospital) beloved dog.

She recently shared a journal on social media of what her week was like after Chalupa, their 12-year-old chihuahua passed away. Her story message may help save other pets.

Rebecca’s Diary
“What a week,” Staab wrote. “Our precious little Chalupa was fatally hit by a car. I immediately flew back to LA from Vancouver.”

The following day, Staab received a call from Dhana Metta Rescue Society, a pet rescue outfit, asking if she could bring a puppy, Roo, back to Vancouver on her return flight. Poor Roo has deformed front legs and needed surgery and a fitting for a custom harness in order to operate front wheels for mobility.

“I knew it was the right thing to do to keep Chalupa’s energy moving forward,” Staab wrote.

Positive Energy
“Roo had SO MUCH FUN at our house!!” Staab happily shared. “He is SO sweet and so happy! This little deformed boy is filled with such bountiful joy and love, in spite of his physical restrictions and previous treatment by humans. He played with our dogs who had been so somber, sad and missing Chalupa.”

It wasn’t just four-legged creatures to whom Roo brought happiness. “He gave Wil kisses and cuddles, and brought a smile to his broken and shattered heart. Roo and I then snuggled on the plane ride back to Vancouver. I love him.”

Anyone who wants to help Roo or other animals sponsored by Dhana Metta Rescue Society in honor of Chalupa or another beloved pet can donate here.

Staab can be seen next in the ABC summer series Somewhere Between, set to debut on Monday, July 24 at 10 p.m.
