GH spoilers have gone out of their way to clarify that the course of Trina and Spencer’s true love won’t be running smoothly for a long while. His obsession with Baby Brother Ace isn’t helping. And neither is the presence of Ace’s mommy, Esme.

Esme (Avery Kristen Pohl) still claims not to remember all the horrible things she did to “Sprina” before her tragic swan dive off a parapet, but she’s also not against doing a few less horrible things now. Here’s how that will affect Port Charles’ most star-crossed young couple.

Sure, when you’re as well matched as Trina (Tabyana Ali) and Spencer (Nicholas Alexander Chavez), there’s a tiny, mathematical chance that anything Esme tries will bounce off harmlessly. After all, they survived her earlier machinations, and she’s supposedly a better person now.

There’s also the strong possibility that Esme won’t need to lift a finger. All the damage to Trina and Spencer’s relationship will, instead, be done by Portia (Brook Kerr). She has decided that Spencer is bad for her baby girl. And that her baby girl needs her mother to make her romantic decisions for her. One would think that considering the lie she told for 20 years about Trina’s paternity, Portia wouldn’t be coming up with a new and exciting way to damage their mother-daughter bond further. One would be wrong.

Unfortunately, the biggest stumbling block in Trina and Spencer’s love story isn’t Portia — it’s Esme. But perhaps not in the traditional way. The biggest stumbling block is that Spencer cannot seem to set boundaries with his ex-girlfriend. He says it’s out of concern for Ace. But it’s feeling more and more like something…more. Esme will get in the way, come hell or high water. It’s just a matter of time.
