Last month, the soap world was in an uproar when news broke that Genie Francis had been released from her General Hospital (GH) contract right in the middle of a big story.
However, according to ABC exec Nathan Varni, the soap only wants her if she’s in a big story, which he told Daytime After Dark the writers are working on now.
“Hopefully we’ve not lost Genie Francis,” he told host Carly. “I know there’s been a lot of chatter online and all kinds of different opinions. She is technically on recurring status as everyone knows.”
He went on to say: “What we want is a prolific, big story for Laura that deserves the many talents of Genie Francis. So our writers are thinking and working on that as we speak.”
“It’s my intention that I hope we can continue to have a relationship as Genie obviously is a very important part of GH and the GH family,” Varni added.
“But you know, we want to be able to service the talents of Genie and we don’t want to just have any tiny little story where she kind of blends into the background.
“We want a Laura-centric story. So we are continuing to work on that and hopefully, that will be on screen sooner than later.”
It looked like Laura was slated to become mayor of Port Charles when she left, which seemed like a pretty big story to us. But, alas, the actress was dropped from her contract and Laura dropped out of sight to tend to grandson, Spencer, in Europe.
Maybe Laura returns with a SORAS’d Spencer and a Cassadine secret that could help her find her presumed-dead son, Nikolas. Now, that’s a big story worth having, don’t you think?
